Could the Garmin eTrex be used on an aeroplane?

Thanks.

I would think so, technically I believe they are used as nav aids now, but I'm not sure it would be allowed, on a commercial flight, many electronic things are not, for security and interferance reasons

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/tech_ops/read.main/103730/ has an interesting (heated) discussion on this subject.

Thanks for that.

So it will definitely work, but it's just whether the airline allows it?

Yes it will work but few airlines allow use of GPS in flight.

Welcome sebby

I have used my GPS-V on a number of flights, it's pretty cool.

There are a couple of threads that disuss it here and here here and here

Enjoy!

Wow, that is some heated thread! I took my GPS V onto a flight once, and got to go in the cockpit. Naturally I took the GPS with me and you'll never guess what the Co Pilot had perched on the "dash"! No, not aV, but a 3 Pilot, instead.
