It really depends on how much money you have to spend, and whether or not you've had any access to either Palm devices or Pocket PC's.
Personally I would go the Pocket PC route, if you're looking for in-car use only, purchase something like a HP iPAQ or Dell Axim, and purchase a GPS mouse that sits on the dashboard and isn't really mobile in the terms you can take it out of the car.
For US usage, go with what the majority of users like, most like PowerLOC Destinator, Navman SmartST Pro (but you are tied to Navman's sleeve), or TravRoute CoPilot.
If you don't want the hassle of running a device with windows on it, and having to soft reset it or solve problems now and again, a dedicated device like a Garmin Street Pilot III or Navman iCN630 might be better, but you will pay a lot more money for one of these devices, but they are more user friendly. |

If you are going the Axim route then a Pretec CF GPS is still a good choice (with the added external aerial for in-car). Then you can use TomTom for driving and Fugawi or Ozi for walking etc. One downside is that the Pretec (the non-LP version) has difficulty in heavily wooded areas (when walking).
