Does anyone know which navigation programs for PPC that support Text To Speach at the moment? I know that Copilot Live 5 does it, but are there more programs out there with this feature?
I'm also interested in opinions about the sound quality in these systems. Are more languages than English supported? As I'm Swedish I'm of course interested in a system that speaks the Swedish road names with a correct pronunciation.
Regards,

You could have a look at Mapopolis. It has TTS but it's supposed to be English only.
Apparently, Mapopolis tries to pronounce non-english road names but gets confused by the non English characters that it doesn't know how to pronounce.
There was talk of trying to replace certain letters with an english equivilent which would sound vaguely correct but I don't know if it ever got implemented or if it is even possible.
Check out the gpspassion.com forums where they are beta testing non-english versions of Mapopolis.
It's a bit difficult for TTS to get English right at the moment, so getting it to do Swedish might be a bit of a tall order. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Thanks for the info. I was kind of expecting that kind of answer, since swedish isn't the language with highest priority for GPS system developers...
In order to get a system that performs well with other languages than english, the TTS core must be created (or adapted) specifically for that other language. Trying to pronounce a Swedish road name with an English voice would probably be a disaster (same thing the other way around), even if the issue with the Swedish special letters was overcome. There are companies, like Loquendo in Italy who develop TTS products for several languages, and it would be nice if products like theirs could be integrated with GPS systems. Maybe we have to wait for some time before we see good solutions for this on the market. |
