Motorway Segments

I don't know if anyone knows this, why does Navigator software (both versions 1 & 2) break a journey on a motorway into sections. For example if I get on the M4 at junction 2 and need to leave at junction 10 TomTom will break the journey down into 3 or 4 segments. It is only when I pass junction 8/9 I am then told to leave a junction 10 with the distance to go to that exit in the main navigator screen. If I drop below my safety speed the correct junction is then displayed in the top right corner (Show Next Motorway) This isn't a major issue I just wondered if there was any reason why this happens. The same thing also happened with Smart ST. I originally used CoPilot which did not break the motorways up into segments.

I have noticed this but only where the junction is one of motorways. e.g. the M25 will be broken at the M11 junction but not at the A10 or A12. Does it also happen at A-road/Motorway junctions?

It seems to do this where the slip road for a junction on the way is especially long. It will tell you to "stay in the right lane" to avoid the slip road.
