I read on the TomTom Go website today that the 300 doesn't have Assisted Satellite Navigation (ASN) when in tunnels.
Having never owned a GPS can someone tell me if this is much of a hindrance compared to say the 500 or 700 that do have ASN ?
If fact on the TomTom Go website today there was no mention of the 500 version.

Some people never use ASN, I'm one of them. It only tries to work out your position when it loses the sat, and tries to guess your location. If there is a traffic jam in tunnel it serves no purpose because it doesn't know you've stopped!
So no, it isn't a big deal.

| ASN doesn't seem to work very well with the current 4.42 software anyway. I have switched it off on mine, and thik it is far more useful to get an external aerial so that the occasions when the signal drops out are fewer, and the signal strength is far better the rest of the time. Apart from tunnels, when ASN gets its knickers on a twist, the only time I have lost my signal is driving round the most built up parts of Leed loop road; with an external aerial on the roof of the car this does not happen at all. |

I have read several reports in here about ASN being not so good and peeps turning it off, but I have always had it on since first turning on my Go and it never seems to miss a beat, in fact I assume TTN on my PDA had asn as well because when I used to go through the dartford tunnel TTN used to keep track for about 75% of the way through, where as TTG keeps track until I emerge, so it seems the timing has been extended slighty on TTG.

ASN uses hardware accelerometers so is not present in PocketPC devices. The symptom you see in the tunnel is TomTom making an educated guess as to direction of travel at the speed you were travelling when reception was lost, this is not ASN which uses the accelerometers to calculat speed and direction when satellite reception is poor or lost completely.
