|
|
Hi
I am new to GPS systems although I have a TOMTOM GO in my car.(which is GREAT, and my wife has now claimed it)
I am working in Ankara for some months and I am thinking of a Handheld like a Garmin ???, BUT as far as I can find out there is no GPS street maps for ANkara. Ihave have checked the Garmin and Magellan websites for suitable maps but no luck.
SO can I scan a ANkara street map and copy into a handheld GPS system and use this to help me get about. I realise this is not the best (or even possible?) but any ideas?
ANkara is as big as London and walking and driving is very difficult if you dont know the city.
thanks |

It is not possible to load raster-images into any gps as they all need vector-maps and they even need them in their own format.
The only way to do this is to make use of a PDA and a gps connected to it (By cable, Compact flash, Bluetooth) or a PDA with the gps already built in. Further you need to install Ozi Explorer CE or Fugawi CE. |

As Mapwalker says, Ozi Explorer or Fugawi are your best options if you want to go the Pocket PC route. You can scan and calibrate a streetmap and it will show you your position. They won't be able to do routing like TT does and the scanned maps take up a lot of memory.
Garmin have a world map for their GPS units, but it only shows major roads in Turkey (no city streets) and it's not routable.
Even without maps, a handheld GPS is some use if it can do off-road routing (Garmin's can and I think Magellan probably can too).
You can mark waypoints at your home and other land marks and use it to get some idea of where you are and which direction home is. The GPS can also keep a track log of the route you took to get somewhere which will allow you to backtrack it when returning. It's also useful to show to taxi drivers to prove that they are driving you round in circles.
Good luck! _________________ Gone fishing! |

Autoroutable street maps of Ankara,İstanbul,İzmir and Antalya in Garmin format is prepared by Turkish distributor of Garmin products. (www.baytekin.com.tr) I use the one prepared for İstanbul with nRoute and it works perfectly. |
