It will only be the radar detector ones that pick up the signals from cameras.

Having static locations in a navigation system will be legal as far as im aware.

but, they must be changing the law, because in a case in 1998 it was said, and i quote..

Since the 27th of January 1998 it has been legal to own and use a radar/laser detector in the United Kingdom.

A judgement of the Queens Bench Divisional Court dated 29th January 1998 makes it clear that the use of Radar Detectors is not unlawful as has hitherto been claimed by some.

In the past prosecutions have been brought by claiming the use of radar detectors was contrary to section 5(b)(i) of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949 as amended by section 3 of the Post Office Act 1969. However the Acts refer to the interception of wireless communications for the purpose of obtaining information as to the content, sender or addressee of any message. The Court concluded that the radar transmission was not communicating a 'message' and therefore equipment designed to detect the presence of the transmission could not decode any such message....

oh well, thats B'liar and cronies for you...

the radar ban may kick in next year with th new traffic bill. However, I guess with an election etc on the horizon some measures will be lost or delayed.

like most things I will believe it when I see it - pretty hard to enforce as well - I've had various radar detectors in my cars since about 1990 and never had a problem before they were "legalised" - they are illegal in Scotland (I think) at the moment and most of the EU.

A bill is going through Parliament to ban them. The GPS type where coordinates of the camera sites are downloaded are OK. Some shops are still selling the radar type.

Sad for all those Snooper S3/4 owners - they pinpoint the cameras by GPS but have a laser detector built in... £400 down the pan

See a detailed thread on teh subject of the Road Safety Bill here.

Basically radar and laser detectors will be outlawed but GPS based alert systems are specifically permitted.

If a legal item, bought legally, is made illegal, will the Government have to pay compensation to the owner (much like handguns a few years ago)?

No, although they paid compensation when handguns were banned they were they did so because the guns had to be surrendered. In the case of radar/laser detectors, they are not making 'ownership' illegal, they are making 'use' illegal so you may posess but not use one.

This is likely to mean a the return of powers for confiscation by police if discovered using one (as well as a charge of perverting the course of justice if using a Laser defeater!).
