Hi
I'll be doing some long haul flights in a few weeks. Can I use my IPAQ & bluetooth GPS onboard an areoplane, or will I get in trouble? Also, is there software that will show where I am on a global map (with as much detail as possible) ? It'd be great to see what cities etc I'm flying over.
Many Thanks

Bluetooth GPS is definitely a No No, it's a transmitter albeit low power and as such is forbidden.
The use of GPS in flight varies from airline to airline, few actually permit them but I have used them on GPS friendly flights. As always, unless the airline specifically permits GPS then you should seek the permission of a flight attendant. Even if the airline permits them, if the flight attendant takes a different view then you will have to switch it off. And you can only use them in the cruise, they must be switched Off for take off and landing.
I've used a CF GPS with Memory-Map in the UK and OziExplorer for a trip to Africa and it worked superbly. It's great fun to see you height and speed and the countries over which you are transitting. _________________ Darren Griffin |

You shouldn't use the Bluetooth unit (it's a radio transmitter) but you can use a CF or wired GPS.
I have used my Garmin GPS on a number of flights. You have to switch it off if the crew ask you to (only happened to me once). You aren't allowed to use it during takeoff and landing, only cruise.
Some airlines officially allow GPS to be used, others don't. Here is a list of airlines, I don't know how accurate it is. http://gpsinformation.net/airgps/airgps.htm
The GPS doesn' t always work very well due to the tiny windows in the aircraft. You have to hold the unit right against the window or it loses lock. Before you check-in, go outside and get a good lock on all visible sats. That way it will have less trouble trying to get a hot-start fix from inside the plane.
Sometimes the GPS has trouble locking on, this probably has something to do with the fact that you are traveling at 600 MPH and 39,000 feet and you have moved a fair distance from the last known position. 8O It might take 5 minutes or more, even with a hot start. _________________ Gone fishing! |
