Desperate for information, motorcycle requirements.

Hi,
Can anybody help please, I have been looking for a navigation system that will fit my needs, but there are so many out there I am now confused.
I need a unit that can be used on my motorcycle (I am a motorcycle instructor), that can be transfered to the car, holding the sat nav on the bike will not be a problem as I can make a bracket to fit. My main concerns are being able to see the screen in bright sunlight. and the slight vibration through the bike.
I also require speed camera alerts, and my destinations by postcode. Stand alone GPS satnav or PDA?

I really don't know. It's likely that Tomtom have a price in mind but as far as I'm aware it hasn't been made public yet. The Team are at CeBIT and if a price is set, I'm sure we'll get to hear about it. How much, or little do you want or expect to spend and what other functionality, apart from what you've already mentioned, are you after?

Hi Tim,
Not much more realy, as long as it's accurate and reliable, with the possibility of purchasing a waterproof jacket for it.
I have been looking at the Naveman NCI 510, Medion MD95025, Garmin Quest, Mio 268. but I am lost in a sea of information, when I think I have picked the one I think is suitable somebody puts me off, usually by the very unhelpfull and un knowledgeable staff of my local suppliers.
I am looking to spend around £400

The Ryder is waterproof, comes with a bluetooth helmett earpiece for the navigation instuctions and does all that Go does. It certianly looks like a great solution but the unit we saw was a prototype and it is not going to be released at the same time as the other GO units. I think they were looking at a Summer launch.

No pricing was known for any of the models displayed.

The Garmin is a good choice for the bike (it's waterproof) but a major drawback is that you can't do speed camera alerts or full postcode searches (it does do partial postcode searches, as do all the others). Confused

The new Tom Tom looks very good, but you might have to wait a while.

Others aren't waterproof so you would need something like an Otter Box.

Ram mounts are very good and not expensive

Thanks Skippy for the info, yes I agree the Garmin looks good, but I really do require speed camera locations.

PC world recommends the PDA, stating they are bullet proof, Do you agree?
I want to narrow the search down to either PDA or stand alone.

On my ZX12R I am currently using a Mitac Mio 168 with the Navigon MN4, mounted in a Brodit active (power only) PDA holder on a StemStand. Works fine for me, even in bright sunlight 8) The Mio is connected to a Collett helmet intercom (myself and 5 friends already had these for bike to bike comms) so I can here the directions. I wired it all into the bike myself - connectors etc from Maplins, cables, looming tape, heatshrink tubing from Vehicle Wiring Products and addonsworld supplied the 12v-5v convertor (actually a fag lighter adaptor but now wired in permanently!)

When it rains I cover it with a piece of clingfilm.

I managed to try out a copy Copilot (if ran for more that 20 minutes without crashing that was good!)
TomTom Nav was ok, but the safety screen is annoying. (I couldn't find away to turn it off -I guess there is)

Navigon was by far the best for my needs, no safety screen, POI Warnings and route plotting on the PC. (I'd like to get a look at MN5 - I hope pocketGPS have a review planned.

Hi Chris
Sorry for the late reply, but thanks for the very informative info, but can you please clarify the power supply. I have tried an ordinary cigarette lighter socket which was connected directly to the battery but it keeps blowing fuses, as you may tell i am no electrician. You state 12v to 5v converter is this my prob?

The Mitac runs on 5 volts, the bike obviously is on 12 volts. The Brodit holder was supplied with a cig lighter plug - I cut this off, soldered cables to the contacts (that would normally go into the socket) and connected these to earth and a switched power supply. You could use any Mitac compatible cig lighter adaptor. The 5v outlet from the adaptor was extended with suitable cables up to the headstock. To allow the whole mounting assembly to be removed I put a connector (obtainable from Maplin) in the power feed.
