PostPosted: Sun Feb 24, 2008 9:35 pm    Post subject: Could not update Reply with quote

Hi

I just tried to update the speed cameras on my TomTom one. I followed the instruction for installing TomTom OV2. However, when I tried to copy the files to the Tom Tom map folder, it kept failing and showing an error message as 'Access deny'.. Could anybody help me?

PS - I downloaded the speed cameras and installed last Feb and they worked fine. However, I just couldn't update now.

Thanks

Varonica

It does have a SD card.

But I don't think it's locked as I copied the speed cameras files to TomTom last April without any problem..

This is why I don't really get it as I didn't do anything to my TomTom during this peiord, not even backup..

Tsk,Tsk!! Wink

Anyway it's still worth checking if the card is locked. It's a small switch on the side - needs to be pushed towards the end with the gold contacts to be un-locked.

Are you competent at copying and pasting files generally using Windows?
If so, try copying ANY small file to the card. What happens then?
Also (using Windows Explorer, check to see if the entire map folder could have become read-only(right click on it and select properties. It doesn't matter if there's a green square in the box, only if there is a tick)

Just to enlarge on this a bit.
An SD card has a little switch on one side. It may have switched itself to 'write protect' since you last wrote something to it. This can sometimes happen when the card is inserted into a device. If the switch is slid towards the gold edge connectors, the SD is write enabled. The converse is true. They usually have a little padlock sign on them as well which should be a bit of a give away. You will have to check the switch to be sure that the SD is not write protected.
@Andy. Snap.!!!!

Just go back one stage further to humour me. Have you actually UNZIPPED the camera files before trying to copy them?

Incidentally, if anybody cares, one of my SD cards has the word "lock" and a tiny arrow pointing at the locking direction. It's too tiny for me to see which direction that is!!! I don't care, it's not locked anyway.

Thanks for everybody's help. Unfortunately it still doesn't work.

1. I checked the SD card and it's unlocked (ie the switch is at the side closed to the golden edge connectors.

2. I cannot copy any file into the map folder. When I checked the properties using Windows Explorer, the box has a green square in the box - not a tick.

Just came to my mind, would it have something to do with my TomTom failed to install any update yesterday? When I used TomTom Home to run the update on the applicaiton, there was an error message saying 'unable to delete file 'data.chk''.

That certainly looks like the same problem.

I still think it might be that "read-only" attributes have been set somehow.

Have another look with Win Explorer, but this time open up the map folder so you can see all its contents. Then you can either right click on some of the files (such as data.chk) and see if they are set to read-only like you did for the folder, or, if you right click in the header bar where it says "Name" "Size" "type" "Date modified" etc, you can add a column for "Attributes" and see them all at once. AFAIK everything should ONLY have the "archive" attribute set (an "A" in the new column). If any are read-only there will be an "R" as well.

Also, can you write a small file to ANYWHERE on the card?

I cannot write a small file anywhere on the card..

When I right click the files in the map folder, I can only see one tab called 'General'. But in the 'General' tab of these file's properties, none of these files have the 'read-only' box ticked.

Should I try to reset the card?

The only other possibility is that the Card is full.

If you Right Click the Drive Letter that is the Card, select Properties, it will tell you the Used Space and the Free Space.

What is the value of the Free Space?

...or has the SD become corrupt?

Could you try re-formatting the card and see if you can then add the desired file(s) in addition to restoring the data already on the card?

Don't think that will be a good idea. Wink

varonica - if you want to try a re-format, do a Windows Explorer first. The instructions can be found on the FAQs Page. Number One.

I don't think that will be a good idea, but I'll tell you how to do it anyway?? Rolling Eyes

Well, nothing else seems to be working - so, short of just replacing the card, trying to re-format it doesn't seem that bad an idea.

After all, nobody else seems to have the perfect solution Confused

Why are we suggesting a reformat when we don't know whether the card is full or not? Smile
