I've used Pharos and Delrome. Happy with Pharos, but looking for something different, why? It seems that there are better GPS program. Question? I am wondering how the Maps are made available. In Pharos I can download a lot of maps into a SD card and I'm able to tavel through multiple states without having to keep "loading" new maps. Does TOM TOM or CoPilot do the same. I.e can I travel from Chicago to Las Vegas without having to do anything related to maps? |

TomTom have precut maps , and you cannot route between them. For Coast-to-Coast travel you can use special maps "Major Roads of USA" or "Cities of the USA" which includes the former.
With CoPilot you can cut maps according to your travel corridor - but you need to do this on the PC prior to travel, and the size of the result cannot exceed 250 MB.
Pocket PC navigation systems are too cheap to offer complete navigable maps of the USA - there is a license restriction imposed both by Navteq and TeleAtlas that prevents that. Only in-car systems offer complete map sets.
So no matter what Pocket Navigation solution you will use, you always have to manually change maps - either by switching them or by pre-cutting them. _________________ Lutz

Lutz, the European version of Navman's SmartST allows seamless navigation between loaded maps without the need to manually switch.
Is this not the same in the US versions? _________________ Ian.

It certainly is in V2 of SmartST and I can't think that V3 would be any different. _________________ Tim |

If that's the case then Navman is in violation of the TeleAtlas license agreement. Good for you, bad for Navman when TeleAtlas finds out. _________________ Lutz

Are you privy to the agreement between TeleAtlas and Navman? This has been one of Navman's strong selling points in V1 (Navtech data) through V2 and into V3 (both TeleAtlas data). _________________ Tim |
