I've recently bought a Road Angel II and I'm not happy. All it seems bothered about is 'blackspots'.

Well, I'm more interested in mobile sites. I've driven past all the known haunts in my location and not a peep.

Me thinks it's going back.

Am I the only one unhappy with my £400 purchase?

Once again they are trying to outlaw speed camera "detectors", which is why things like road angel are becoming more popular, they don't actually detect the cameras. This is why databases of "blackspots" are still legal. Theoretically, fixed cameras have to be placed in blackspots. These places are dangerous, so it's legal for people to inform each other of these "dangerous places".

Mobile cameras, on the other hand, are there so the police can make sure you aren't speeding *anywhere*. If someone were to put up a sign warning motorists of a mobile camera, they would be stopping the police from detecting crimes, so this would be illegal. By the same logic, it's illegal for road angel to inform you of mobile cameras (it would also be impossible for the database to be kept up to date as the cameras can be moved as often as the police like).

I suggest using something like CheckPOInt with a standard PDA and GPS to warn you of fixed cameras (does the same as road angel). And using a real detector (e.g. valentine, bel, escort) to detect mobile cameras.

My RA classic stores mobile camera location so I doubt it’s is illegal. You can also store locations yourself by any of four generic camera types. These will be kept on your own RA and once verified by Blackspot they will be added to the database so that other RA’s when updated also get the info. So it works two ways you input the locations, others input locations and eventually everyone gets the new locations, fixed, mobile, SPEC’s etc.

Regarding blackspots I turned off the audio warning for them as I found it distraction, now it just flashes red.

Have you updated your RA? I would expect a new RA to have an out of date database, I update mine every two weeks on average.

Sorry, when I said mobile... I meant the handheld cameras.
