NMEA protocol slower than Sirf???

Please excuse my ignorance on this subject.

I've noticed that when my Mitac Mio 168 is set (using CE monitor) to Sirf with 56000 baud rate I get a very fast GPS lock in Tom Tom GPS (within 15 sec). However when I set it to NMEA with 4800 so that I can use Vito SmartMap and GPSdash it takes almost a minute to lock onto the same satellites.

Is this usual. I've repeated the test several times. The number of satellites and quality of signal is the same.. just the time to locate is much more with NMEA. Could the baud rate be a factor (i.e. 56000 versus 4800)??

You will have to repeat your tests - technically your result is "impossible" .

As far as I know the only real difference between NMEA and SiRF protocol is the packaging of data (ANSI vs binary representation) . Even the transfer speed is irrelevant - the GPS update frequency is 1 Hz, and 4800 is still perfectly enough even if you enable all $GP sequences to be sent once a second (you can transfer 533 characters in that time)
