Another question. What are the units of the road speeds in the USERTRIP file? MPH or KM/H? Is there likely to be any difference between the US and Europe versions?

The routing algorithm in CoPilot is seriously broken.

When you choose the "Quickest" route, CoPilot will try and use the motorway if at all possible and ignore other road types. This doesn't necessarily give the Quickest route and can sometimes add a large time and distance to your journey.

Also, the "Shortest" route also ignores many minor road types unless it's absolutely necessary to get to the destination using these roads.

Calculating a shortest distance does not involve a time factor, while of course calculating a quickest route does. Hence, Road Speed adjustments relate to Quickest routing, while Road Type bias adjustments are to do with Shortest routing.

It is essential not to mix up these two concepts. However, it may be that ALK themselves, and indeed the PocketGPS forum team have the concepts mixed. Please see the following thread:
