You won't find them on the Microsoft site - these files are hardware specific.

Well, I feel dumb! I thought I had PocketPC 2003, but apparently not. The HP Bluetooth Driver update, SP28789 at http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/download/22254.html will not install. Now, I can't even determine for sure what version of PocketPC I have.

Under Settings-About, it says "Version 3.0.11171 (Build 11178)" Can you tell me if this is PocketPC 2002?

I also am unclear about needing a ROM to upgrade from 2002. At the site http://www.hp.com/sbso/special/ppc_upgrade.html , it says I can buy a non-ROM upgrade to 2003 for US$29.95. Is this something I can do? Should do?

yes, you do have 2002. Which - in itself - is not such a bad thing. You can either apply the SD card driver update for 2002 (which also contains a BT update) for free, or you could pay for the upgrade to 2003 (which is a ROM upgrade, no matter what they tell you).

The benefits of 2003 are marginal, but on the other hand it's also not worse than 2002 - in fact it should be a tad more stable.

Thanks very much! Still a couple of questions:

Where can I get the SD card driver upgrade?

Do you think this will do anything to improve the original problem, which is loss of BT connection? When I turn off the iPaq, it always loses the BT connection to the GPS receiver. The only way I have found to re-establish the connection is to do the previously mentioned soft reset. Once the iPag reboots, I bring up the BT manager to make a serial connection (note that I do not establish a bond). This works great until I turn off the iPaq; then the cycle begin over again. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Try this

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/download/22254.html

It should also answer your other questions.

The description sounds like just what I need. But the link is for the SP28789 which I tried to install and which failed. I installed ActiveSync 3.7.1 and then tried it again; but still it failed. The program opens and the PC thinks it has properly finished installing on the iPaq, but the iPaq gives an error message (I don't recall the exact wording) to the effect that the upgrade is not compatible. I took this to indicate that I needed PocketPC 2003.

Is there another place to get the SD card driver update that will work for 2002? Thanks again for all your help.

No. Please post the exact error message.

Please do a soft reset on your iPAQ before you try the upgrade

OK, here is what happens:

1. Soft reset iPaq. Place in cradle.
2. Connect to Laptop via USB
3. ActiveSync comes up on both devices. I establish a Guest partnership.
4. Execute SP28789.exe, accept License, etc.
5. Message "H3900 BT Update is installing...."
6. "Retrieving application data from the mobile device."
7. "Install 'H3900 BT Driver Update' using the default application install directory?" I say YES.
8. PC msg "Initializing".... "Installing" ... Check your device for addtional steps"
9. iPaq error message: HP Setup - "ERROR: INVALID REVISION. This upate utility cannot be used for your IPAQ Pocket PC". "Setup Failed. HP h3900 BT Driver update was not installed successfully. Please run Setup again."

My iPaq is 3900 Series, Model 3970, P/N 269809-001.
MS Pocket PC Ver 3.0.11171 (Build 11178)
Processor Intel PXA250; 63.18MB
Bluetooth Security Manager Version 1.1
Expansion Slot: Not in use

(I also tried with a Standard - not Guest - Partnership, with the same results.)

That is indeed weird. I have the exact same 3970 and the update works just fine. Are you sure you are not trying to apply the 2003 ersion of the BT fix?

Actually, I am not sure. The web page you cited, says it is for Pocket PC 2003. I searched around HP.com and found the support page for Pocket PC 2003 and Pocket PC 2002. For 2002, I find several updates, among them: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/download/17002.html which is the SP23479 2.1 ROM upgrade; and http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/download/19632.html which is the SD card driver update; and http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/download/16579.html, the End User Update.

Do these have the 2002 BT update? Should I try to apply all these?

My bad. I gave you the wrong link.

You don't need the EUU, it's included in the 2.10 ROM.

So try the ROM upgrade, and then the SD driver.

Any version number beginning 3.0 is Pocket PC 2002.

The SD driver update will only install on the 2.10 ROM. If you still have the 2.00 ROM installed, you will need to upgrade to 2.10 first, then install the SD update. There's various ways to tell what ROM version you have installed - you can look in the HP Asset Viewer or on the 'splash' screen when you soft reset (look at the bottom right).

Both the infrared and EUU3 updates are rolled into the 2.10 ROM.

For the 3900 series:
1.xx ROMs are Pocket PC 2002 for the 395x (no Bluetooth)
2.xx ROMs are Pocket PC 2002 for the 397x (Bluetooth)
3.00 ROM is Pocket PC 2003 for the 395x
4.00 ROM is Pocket PC 2003 for the 397x.

The SD driver update comes in two versions, one for the 395x (no Bluetooth) and one for the Bluetooth 397x. However, it does not contain a Bluetooth stack update. Do make sure you choose the right version for your iPAQ, though.

The only Bluetooth stack update available is for a 397x updated to Pocket PC 2003; HP have recently made available a soft-loadable version of the 1.4.1 build 58 Bluetooth stack to replace the earlier 1.4.1 Bluetooth stack in the Pocket PC 2003 ROM. There are no Bluetooth updates for Pocket PC 2002; the Bluetooth stack in the Pocket PC 2002 ROM is quite antiquated.

If you want the Pocket PC 2003 upgrade (I have it on my 3970), HP are discontinuing it at the end of the month, so buy now!

I updated to the 2.10 ROM and am in the process of upgrading th eSD driver. I guess I will have to check to see if that helps the BT at all, and quickly buy the 2003 upgrade if I need it. Thanks for everyone's help.

That's not true - the SD driver update also sneaks in a BT stack change.
