The X through a icon ??

hi, sorry if this sounds like a question from an idiot :D , but when there is a X over an icon, does that mean it is on or off..I ask because in preferences there is a cross on sound, but the "turn off map display" has no cross but the maps come up.......

hypnos, if the sound has a cross on it then it means it is ON, stupid i know, but it's basically saying, X dont touch it, otherwise your voice prompts will go off.
