Looking for some advice, which I'm sure will have been posted in the past, but in my ignorance can't find!

When I purchased my TomTom 2 way back, I got an unbranded cheap and nasty wired GPS unit which has worked moderately well.

I now want to get something a little more reliable but having read reviews as to what to buy, and where to buy it from I am struggling to make any informed decision.

I'm running PPC 2003, TomTom 3 on an Ipaq 5555.

I welcome all your advice and thoughts, and thank you in anticipation.

If you foresee any need to use the GPS away from the car then you ought to consider a BT unit.

If your only use will be in-car then BT has the advantage of allowing you to place the receiver wherever you choose without the constraints that wires impose.

On the other hand a good wired GPS Mouse is at least as efficient (so long as you don't have a coated windscreen) and although you have an extra wire it is a simpler set-up and cheaper!

Darren,

Thanks for your advise. I'm reasonably up to speed with bluetooth and wifi ... and think that a hard wired GPS is the way ahead, but there are so many to choose from, can you suggest a good model/brand to look at? Cheers

It's the way ahead if you want a permanent in-car system.
However you can't beat Bluetooth for portability and it can be hard wired if you so desire.

When I started I had CF Card GPS but this failed to lock into Satellites in the car due to having a coated windscreen. I then changed to the Holux wired GPS mouse and it works perfectly in the car, even with the tinted window. So I would recommend the Holux Thumbs Up , and there is a new model that has just been released which is tiny. Both models have a magnetic base, so if you have a metal speaker grill at the front of the dash near the window you can place it there.

Depending on the car, the wires can be hidden in the dash as well so you have no wires flapping around.

But as mentioned this is only useful if you are only going to use it in a car.
