okay, so I just bought this Navman 3450 to go with my iPAQ3765 and... nothing happens

I tried it with the SmartST Professional software that came with it, followed the quick reference etc, and I am able to look up streets in the soft, but I get no GPS

I tried it with my friends TomTom software, same problem, only here it asked for the name of an "unknown card"

so off goes TT on goes ST and I still have the same problem.

how do I know the GPS is trying to find the satelites? since I'm not sure it is - shouldn't there be a "search in progress" indicator?

next problem: to put maps on a CF card it says in the manual "put the iPAQ in the navman, then put it back in the sleeve" - ony problem is, when the navman is on the iPAQ, I can't get it in the ActiveSync sleeve

does anyone have a solution for either problem?

thx

First off, go to the 'Downloads' section on this site and get the Navman serial driver 3.1.6 from the Navman section. Install it to your iPAQ via Activesync and this should sort out your 'Unknown card' problem.

Second, if your Activesync docking sleeve is the same as mine then the iPAQ with sleeve will fit. Does the docking sleeve have a push-down piece on the inner edge of each side? If so, just be a bit firmer when you insert the iPAQ. It will push these two sliding bits down and they will then 'lock' in the down position when you remove the iPAQ again.

If you then need to dock the iPAQ without the sleeve then there is a button to press just where the data cable goes into the back of the docking cradle.

Tim,

thx for the quick reply!

As you said (I found that out meanwhile) I just had to push a bit firmer - I guess sometimes you can be too carefull..

I already have the latest driver installed, but I only get the "unknown card" message with TomTom, not with smartST. I would have preferred TT (personal preference, I find it "easier") but I'll go with ST, IF I get that to work, which is not the case (yet).

How can I see it is trying to connect?

I get

[green light+] COM4: NAVMAN iPAQ GPS
longitude / latitude/speed

[half circle with 12 separate blocks and red circle in the middle

[drawing+] 0 UTC 00,00,00

OK, again, go to downloads and download the file called SP GPS view. Extract the .exe file and copy it to your iPAQ. On the iPAQ ensure that no other programmes are running (use iTask or do a soft reset). Run SP GPS View using file explorer to locate it. Tap Comms and then Start (detect) and tell me what comes up.

Incidentally, my old 3850 wouldn't run SmartST if Activesync was still in the background.....this may have something to do with it, too.

Tim,

when I start up the SP View, it says "COM4 - not connected"

I tapped 'comms' - 'start' and get

0 or N everywhere (which I expected because of the not connected msg)

I also tried ports 1,2,3 & 9 with the same result

Did I buy a dead sleeve?

OK, the second thing, where you got 'Last error=55" is, I think, because you tried to have two instances of GPS View running. Try a soft reset and run it again, then connect again and go outside with a free view of the sky. By the way, do the 'Time', 'Lat' and 'Long' readings change, especially the 'Time' one?

Can you try doing a 'Factory restart' from the 'Commands' menu and tell me what happens then?

From the info you've given me, your sleeve is an old model, which notoriously takes longer to acquire a fix than the new SE sleeves. But it does appear to be passing information to the iPAQ....

Oh, if you have an SE sleeve, go here to get the firmware update. When you've updated the sleeve try everything again. Also, there is another diagnostic toll there, just in case you want it.

No probs, that's what we're here for. :D Hope it all works. BTW, could you put your location in your profile as some advice depends on where you are.
