I think we may be onto something...

It looks as though there may be two version of the TT3 CD....
Both are marked on the CD a Part No. 3C00.060
Directory:
TomTomNavigator/nvuk/map/mre

Version with Ireland:

Major_Roads_of_Europe.bmp 35K dated 06/01/2004
Major_Roads_of_Europe.cab 82,459K dated 08/03/2004
Major_Roads_of_Europe.INI 1K dated 08/03/2004

Version without Ireland (my version):

Major_Roads_of_Europe.bmp 35K dated 06/01/2004
Major_Roads_of_Europe.cab 84,045K dated 04/02/2004
Major_Roads_of_Europe.INI 1K dated 04/02/2004

Which leads me to the conclusion that TomTom changed the CD without changing the version number.

If anyone else can check their CD and if Ireland is/is not available to confirm the above it would be appreciated.
I'll then forward this information to TomTom

cheers

Brett

Dublin to Cork planned ok.

I will check my TT3 later

It looks as though I am going to have to go back to TomTom and get a working CD out of them.
It is probably worth quoting this topic at them.

Unless anyone else has some other ideas?
I can't believe I'm the only one to have noticed this?

Yep, mine is the first of your options, ie cab file is 82459kB dated 8/3/04, and it DOES contain maps of Ireland in MRE

Unless you desperately need the digital maps straight away - I wouldn't worry about it too much for the moment - TT have announced an upgrade plan from TTN3 -> 5 in May (probably similar to the TTN2 ->3 upgrade last year) which if you're willing to pay a little I'm sure the new version will include it - and hopefully newer maps (I remember from 2->3 I only needed to pay shipping, but those going from 1->3 needed to pay a little more if I recall?).

Also, I am Irish but have been living in Edinburgh for the last 4 years; ocassionally I take the ferry from Troon to Belfast and drive down to dublin and in a simple navigation from belfast city to dublin (almost a straight line) the maps of the republic are so poor that by staying on the main road (motorway) TT assumes I'm in a field for a good portion of the journey; I never use it when I go back anymore because I find the Irish coverage too poor, considering some of the main motorway from north to south isn't there, and it's been around for a while. Hopefully TTN5 will provide better results, but unless you really really need/want ttn3 MRE Irish maps I wouldn't worry about it too much for the time being.

Yes I can see your point, it probably makes sense to wait for the upgrade especially if the current coverage is so poor.
The whole episode has left me rather confused and it would have been nice to have had a definitive answer. I still haven't found out why some people can see the the country and others can't.
This was the first time I've ever contacted TT support and frankly I wasn't impressed with their response.

I've been told Medion covers Ireland so that may well be worth me testing.

regards

This is the latest from TomTom...

You are not having a corrupt CD, but a TTN3 CD from early / mid 2004. Products shipped contain the latest map data provided to us. Some maps might therefore be more up to date then others. Map updates for existing customers however are done via a official product upgrade programm about once a year. So in order to get the latest map release, you will have to wait for the upcoming TomTom Navigator 5 Upgrade programme. You will then receive the latest map data of your region. Please registered for our newsletter which will also inform you about the start of the upgrade programme.

We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team

Hi Brett,

I only bought my tomtom Navigator 3 last week, so I am a little new to all this.

However, I can confirm that Rep of Ireland is covered on my Major roads of Europe map, as I live in Dublin, and have used it lots already.

Regards,

Falcon.

Indeed it is just rather annoying (see reply above from TomTom) that SOME CDs in TT3 do not cover the republic. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Just checked again and planned a route from Cork to Dublin - 3:16 hours and 166.9 miles..... Also Ireland shows on the Map. I once had a problem similar to this and it was a problem with the SD card. I bought a newer faster card and all worked well.

Regards,

Steve

Just to confirm that this is NOT a card issue. I've just purchased a 32X Lexar card and the result is the same - no coverage (and corruption) of Ireland.
I think we have a definitive answer:
There are at least two versions of TomTom3 maps for Major Roads of europe - One covers Ireland (though not that well) and the other does not.

Roll-on the new version!

I have found the Lexar x32 SD card very reliable, and as mentioned earlier very fast. Role on Version 5....!

Strange there are 2 versions - I got mine (upgrade) very early when it was first released, by keeping an eye on this site. Was your copy an upgrade from TT2?

No, the full version purchased around a year ago.
I am pleased with the Lexar card as well, but I think it needs clarifying that its performance has NOTHING to do with the fact that Irish maps are corrupt.
I think TomTom do not come out of this smelling of roses. At the very least they should offer users the option to replace what are in effect faulty maps.

Dear...,

Unfortunately Ireland is not included.
It will be included in Tomtom Navigator 5. We advice you to subscribe to our newsletters so you can receive an e-mail when the upgrade process will start.
