How do receivers work

I am interested in how a GPS receiver works.
If it can track 12 satelites, does it have 12 'receivers' in it? i.e. how does it receive from each satelite or do they all use the same frequency and identify themselves by an ID
If the latter, then why do some receivers only track 12, whilst others track 16?
