I am new to this, do please help

Trine II links fine to PDA & PC. Can transer files from GPS to PC & PDA no worries via BT.

Howver the ascii file has only a lat long time, the bin file the docs suggest has altitute, speed etc.

I want to be able to plot from the datalogger (car jouneys, flights in my light AC etc) .. But have no idea what SW will read / plot the bin files.

Sorry, but I need advice ..

Peter

for starters, stick with the ascii file. Use Microsoft MapPoint or similiar to plot your tracks.

if you use the binary format you are wasting precious memory on the Trine . you only need this for geo surveying.

Thanks for the advice ..

The ASCII File does not need to contain Altitude ..

I'm a pilot and would love to plot hight / speed etc in 3d ..

DO you know any SW ? How to turn Altitude recording on etc ?

Thanks .. Peter

Altitude, uhm... the eternal step child...

For starters, be always aware that altitude information is not very reliable - the VDOP is very high. It improves when you use DGPS, but don't rely on it.

To make matters worse, some SiRF chipsets calculate the altitude offset from the geoid model the wrong way around, and some don't calculate it at all.

Then, verify your Trine's documentation and check that it actually records altitude. I am using a DeLorme BlueLogger (aka Leadtek 9537) which DOES record altitude.

Umm .. perhaps this was not so stuid .. I sawa guy with a garmin uses to plot his sky dives in 3d , I had hoped to do similar with the Trine ..

Can you move this chat to a better place so that I can get help without hogging your time !!

The documentation http://www.emtac.com/download/CRUX_LOG%20manual.pdf claims that ALT is in the log ..

However I get this as a log ..

Datum,WGS84,WGS84,0,0,0,0,0
TP,D, 053.725503000, -02.540325000, 12/25/2004,15:07:24,1

Can you confirm that you have the firmware shown in the manual? Your data log looks very different from what they show. Why don't you give Emtac support a buzz?

I'd be surprised if you were picking up an EGNOS signal in the UK at present; unless things have changed very recently, the only satellite transmitting ETSB (EGNOS test signal) data is PRN131, which is very low to the horizon in the UK.

It's possible you'll pick up PRN131 when airborne - but it's far more likely you're picking up PRN122, which is a WAAS satellite. PRN122 does have some information that will help a bit in Europe, but WAAS doesn't contain wide area differential correction information for Europe.

Meanwhile, the problems that Lutz mentioned only come into play if you are interested in absolute altitude - though they are very real for SiRF based GPSes.

If all you're interested in is your relative altitude during a skydive (or even during a flight, when it should be obvious from the data when you're on the ground), you can easily correct the figures so that when you're at rest you're on the ground.
