The big problem is going to be keeping the IR ports on both the phone and the Pocket PC lined up in car.

Take a look at this post and the one linked to it. When you create the connection (Start Menu, Settings, Connections tab, Connections), you'll want to select "Generic IrDA" (or the equivalent infra-red option) instead of "Bluetooth Dialup Modem" or similar.

I have found a solution to the infra-red port alignment issue.

I have a CoPilot GPS sleeve, which has an inch and a halfish squarish antenna that sticks out at 45 degrees at the top of the Ipaq. I use a stout elestic band to hold the phone on top of the antenna!

Despite the angle, it works well. The problem with this approach is:

1) It blocks the GPS signal, so I often lose the GPS lock while updating.
2) Becasue of that I have to attach and re-attach it each time I want to update - not the best thing to be doing while hurtling down the motorway!

My master plan is to get a Compact Flash GPRS card, plug this into the CF slot in the CoPilot, and use the SD slot in my IPAQ to run TTN from. This will be cheaper than an SD GPRS card, which I believe you can get.
