Really? That is the propaganda I'm talking about. What a load of rubbish. It includes mis-used data (the 30% of accidents thing again) - no evidence or a definition of what 'speeding' is and is essentially a regurgitation of all of the nonsense around this subject. Not even any analysis of why a given stretch of road ought to have a particular speed limit. total hogwash.

Bad driver decisions are the cause of most accidents and guess what? Young people have less experience and make more mistakes plus males in particular do take risks. The signs nailed up along the road don't make any difference.

Setting speed limits that are actually needed at the 85th percentile speed is the way to ensure smooth traffic flow on a given stretch - and that could easily be WAY higher than limits set on many roads, particularly in the UK where they are being lowered everywhere. Then drivers adjusting their speed to suit the changing conditions ALL the time - not when a sign decrees it so.

The use of speed cameras and in particular ASC's reduces thinking - dumbs down the process vastly and leaves a single variable as the main (only) focus.

Totally counter productive - over simplified but potentially lucrative (hence their popularity as a 'solution') and satisfying to the 'we know best' mentality of civil servants.

Pulling out of a side road into a main road into the pathh of a motorcycle car or lorry is much more likely to injure someone than going 10mph over the limit.
Ah, you seem to have completely missed the point of lowering speed limits.

a. If the motorcycle was doing 10MP, he probably would have been able to easily stop and swear at the other driver profusely.
b. If he were doing 30MPH, likely he will likely hit the car and do damage to both the car and his M/C and possibly himself.
c. If he were doing 60MPH, he will do considerable damage to the car and his M/C and he would likely end up in either a hospital or the morgue.
So speed kills. Same circumstances, 10MPH, minimal outcome, 60MPH possible death. QED
Now let's look at a different angle. Consider pedestrians walking into the road without looking both ways etc. whilst engrossed in TwitBook or Candy crush. No, let's not bother, but I think you might be able to see the point now. No?

And I think this post describes well the way speed limits can be (and are increasingly being) mis-used and the problems potential arising. In the example given the limit is probably 40mph. The system as-was relied on the driver to select the correct speed. In this case 10 mph. It is really practical or desirable to set the limit to 10mph at that point for 24 hours a day? The speed limit is not relevant and trying to improve safety be TELLING people how fast to drive for the whole road network is simply impossible.

And 'speed cameras' of what ever type have zero effect on any of these decisions being made below the limit except to reduce driver engagement - the very thing the system relies on to work!
