Hey all,

I currently own a Novus GPS and love it as its pretty much "plug and play".. You turn it on and voila just works, however as Novus are no longer supplying updates its gonna get out of date quite quickly..

Anyway looking to move to CameraAlerts and was wondering anyone tried using it on a dedicated mobile??

I have a few old Android mobiles and was wondering if anyone has tried setting it up in a semi-permanent way, ie keep in out of sight, always on when the engine is on and maybe an external speaker?

Or turning the android device on/off when I get in /out of the car..

Any experiences?

No reason why it shouldn't work. There are several apps in the Play store which shall start an app upon certain conditions (i.e. external power source). CamerAlert is a proven app with smartphones so why not give it a try?

How did you get on with using an old phone?

I have today tried my old Galaxy S1, downloaded the camera app and also an app that puts the phone into standby when ignition switched off and back on when ignition switched back on.

My car normally own stands at most a day and a half so should stay in standby so need to ever touch it.

Can only use the speed camera app without maps as no data connection but works fine in list mode. I could update the database over wifi from my current S4 phone weekly.

to be honest I never had the chance to do it.. I still have a novus (talex) device and the DB is ok..

but its on the to do list..

My main concern was would the mobile flatten the car battery when in standby... I dont drive the car everday...

What app did you use to put your phone into standby?

Shocked Your car battery will not notice the tiny amount of current that the phone will take when fully charged.

App used is called stayawake.

I will be trying the phone out over the next few days, going to leave phone running of the 12v ignition aux socket and see if phone stays charged. I drive for approx 1 hour a day and use a decent usb car charger.

I want to use the ignition so that the phone auto wakes up and sleeps.
