Please could someone advise me how to load these onto my new Garmin?

I also want to download the sound files that allow me to customise my warnings.

All help appreciated.

Angry ;-)

As the NuLink models are new, I expect they just haven't been added to the compatibility chart HERE yet.

I presume they still use Garmin's POILoader software to add POIs though? (I'd be 99% sure of that).

If so, then the instructions will be the same as for any Nuvi model so there is an Installation Guide and a Video Guide.

If you want to add warning voices, the instructions are here, but it basically means adding the voice files to the same folder as the camera files and then uploading them all to the Garmin at the same time (using POI Loader as explained in the main instructions).

Hope that helps... any problems, just shout.[/url]

Andy thank you for your posting.

I have been able to load the camera database onto my new Garmin 2390 as instructed by yourself.

However, the customised voice files (warnings) even though loaded by the POI loader at the same time as the database do not work. This is also the same result when trying to use the recently released voice pack files.

All I get is a tone to warn of a speed camera alert and then a further beep for every .1 of a mile travelled closer to the camera.

Any further udeas from anyone would be appreciated.

I don't have access to any Garmin models , so I'm working in the dark, but the usual rule seems to be that if your model has an mp3 music player, then you use mp3 format files for the voice warnings, but if it doesn't, then you use .wav versions of the warnings.

Not sure if that helps at all....

Andy,

I checked this out first as I knew the 2390 didn't play MP3 files.

I presume that there is a change from what you could do with a Nuviu and what can be done on a Nulink?

i think for playing the wav files you need to have a file called 'sox.exe' in your POI folder. then POILoader can use the wav files.

Nulink is not a device. It is a feature of SOME Nuvi devices.

The voices work on my 2390, but you must put the correct version of sox into the POILoader folder:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/sox/files/sox/14.0.1/

You also really need to reduce the volume of all the voice wavs first, because they are miles louder than any other warnings (like the motorway bridge warning).

Mine's off to ebay though, didn't fare well against my old Tomtom.

MaFt and Pottsy,

Thank you for your replies.

I was able to configure my custom voice pack after following MaFt's instructions and I am now happy.

Pottsy, your review of the PNDs was excellent and very interesting to read. However, at present I have not had any issues with traffic and the 2390 and remain content with my new purchase. The Garmin has replaced a Go 740 which for different reasons had been back to Tom Tom three times with various screen crashing issues and HD traffic / sim issues plus bad bluetooth connections. My patience ran out and I had to move on.

Thanks again for your posts.

Have just posted in http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=599948#599948 and then found this page.
Same request, is there any chance of a 'Idiot's Guide' to getting the database onto a 2390 please?
Not tech savvy or confident enough to go into the 2390 without it up!

Have you already tried the "standard" set of instructions for Garmin POILoader (text version or video guide) and it's not working?

If so, where exactly do things start to go wrong?

It may be that we don't need to create a "special" set of instructions for the 2390, but just make some changes for clarity to the normal ones. (It *does* say the standard instructions are meant for the Nulink models)

Its when you get things like ' need to add sox.xe to the POI Loader' and the other forum refers to the need to change the volume of the .wav files individually and change the size of the graphics that I freeze and don't go any further!

Understood...
I had not realised that the main Garmin instructions do not include ANY reference of what to do about the sound files.

There are some instructions about it (and a link to get sox.exe) on the OLD voice warnings page (here, but as there are big warnings about that page not being current, it's certainly confusing.

Unfortunately, I'm not a Garmin user at all, so I would not be the best person to re-write the instructions like I did for the TomTom set.

Is there a Garmin expert here, either in the admin team or one of the members, who could take on the job?

---
As for the level issue, it seems that SOME Garmin units replay the POI/camera voice warnings louder than the navigation voices.

Maybe it is time for us to produce an alternative set of audio files with a reduced level for use in those circumstances.
I can do the actual level reduction and MaFt could tweak the download system to offer them, but I'd need someone with an affected Garmin to liaise with in order to do some experiments to find out HOW MUCH quieter they need to be, and whether it is required for both the .mp3 and the .wav versions, or just for one of them.
