After several more hours, I have been through the whole process again.

The map info screen on the Garmin still shows the same view as on my previous post, with both maps still ticked, and only 2 small parts of the 2013 map present.

The Mapinstall now tells me 'this device already has your latest maps installed'.

The Garmin SD folder shows the folder I named 'Map' as empty.

Before I installed this last time, the Mapinstall page told me that it would delete the 2012 map and install the whole 2013 Europe 466 individual maps I had requested. I put the Garmin HD Icon into the trash before installing, so that the Mapinstall would put the map onto the SD card.

Something seems drastically wrong.

What exactly is on your sd card? You say the map folder is empty, but what else is there?

I'm not familiar with this device but do you mean the main Garmin memory that appears as a disk icon?

If so, I think that's a very bad idea. That area contains all the device specific data and there is a danger that some will be lost if the computer OS decides to automatically fully or partially tidy/clear trash. This may render the device useless.

I'm sure users with more experience of this device may clarify.

The GarminSD Card contains

Folder named Garmin containing 58B...............8C8.gma 32KB
gmapsupp.img 2.63 GB

Folder named Map which I created and which is empty.

Mapinstall did not give me a choice to install on the SD card until I placed the garmin HD icon in the trash. Before I did this, the only choice was to put the map on the 'Device = SD'.

I thought it was safe to put the HD icon in the trash because this is the advised process before disconnecting the Garmin.

I have not come across that advice before but it may be specific to that device or your PC's operating system.

The usual procedure is to unmount or 'safely remove' before disconnecting.

gmapsupp.img is your map.

Copy that and any other files on the card that start with gmapsupp into the Map folder. The map should then appear in Tools, Settings, Map, Info Smile

I dragged the gmapsupp.img into the Map folder but the map info on the Garmin still shows the same partial map as before.
Should I try using Mapinstall again?

I don't believe that's the problem as the size of gmapsupp.img indicates that it's a far larger download, I can't check exactly but it's about right for all of Europe.

If you eject the sd card from your nuvi what do you then see under Map Info?

Have you tried deselecting 2012.10 and selecting 2013.20 ... what happens when you do, are you able to view the whole of Europe?

You're not in the Sussex area by any chance? If you are we could meet up!

Without SD card in place, map info shows just NT 2012.10 [1] ALL

Deselecting 2012.10 and selecting 2013.20 does not appear to change things. I tried selecting 2 towns in Portugal and they were not available.

Selecting foreign town names isn't always reliable, as spelling often differs from what we think Smile

Try zooming way out, then dragging the map to Portugal and zoom way in ... that will show whether the map is there.

The fact the map disappears when you remove the sd card and the size of the map file would indicate that the map has loaded onto the card.

I have deselected the 2012 map and only have the 2013 selected, as shown on the Garmin map info as a partial download.

I have checked on 2 routes I had saved in Portugal, before buying the map upgrade, and both routes are showing up as correct.

I have checked on several places around where I live (in Lancashire by the way) and they all show up correctly.

So do you think I have the latest full maps of Europe fully installed on the Garmin, even though the Map Info shows it as only ihaving 2 very small parts?

It's quite possible. Here's what I would do to check. Download Garmin's free mapping program, Basecamp.

It will read the maps off your nuvi when you plug it into your PC. You can then use Basecamp to look at the map on the card and see exactly what you have loaded Smile

Have downloaded Basecamp.

Top Left shows my Garmin devices
Nuvi 1490
Garmin SD

How do I look at the map on the card?

There will be a drop down list along the top showing the maps, if not go to View, Toolbars and select the Map Product toolbar.

My Mac OS will not take the latest version of Basecamp, and on my version there is no drop down list across the top showing maps, and the View, Toolbars does not give a Map Product toolbar.
However, I've taken up enough of your time already, for which I am very grateful.
I now seem to have a workable version of the latest maps of Europe which I can now try out next week when I am due to go on holiday to Portugal.
Thank you again for all your efforts to sort out my problems.
John
