I'm considering buying the Lifetime Map Upgrade from Amazon for my 1490. Having read many of the 90 customer reviews, I am left somewhat confused about how to do it without encountering problems.
What would I need to install before beginning the download?
Will I need an SD card or is there sufficient room on the internal memory?
Any advice would be appreciated.

John

You don't say which map you have/are buying, but if the full EU set I had that loaded on my 1490 without the need for a SD card.

Having said that, I now only have Western Europe loaded, as I didn't have a need for the rest of Europe.

You can in any case free up a substantial amount of space by deleteing all the unneeded help, voice, text, keyboard, vehicle and EULA files.

The main problem with map space really applies to the US models, which only have 2GB as opposed to the EU model that comes with 4GB of memory.

My map at the moment is CN Europe NT 2012.10 [1] ALL.

I would like the latest full Europe lifetime version, which is for sale on Amazon as a download.

Some reviewers on Amazon have mentioned downloading some software before downloading the map update, other reviewers have said they just connected to the computer and immediately started the download without any problems.

I don't feel confident about deleting help, voice, text, etc., so would it be better for me to get a SD card, to avoid running out of memory part way through the map download?

If you're not confident then you might be better doing as you suggest and get a sd card.

There's no need to load any additional sofware, once you've registered your lifetime maps you simply log on to the Garmin website, log in to your account and download from there Smile

I've managed to download the update to my computer and have received the message telling my maps are up to date.

I have inserted a SD card into the Garmin and a new HD icon is showing on the desktop as "No Name" which I guess is the new SD card.

However, when asked if I wish to download the new map to my device, and click on continue, I am not offered a choice of putting it onto the SD card, which is where I want it to go.

How do I select the SD Card as the destination?

Having searched for help on the forum, I came across a reference to trying to install using Mapinstall, but again I could find no way of selecting the SD disk.

A short download took place and now the Garmin map info is showing
CN Europe NT 2013.20 [1] LEGNICA, POLSKA
CN Europe NT 2012.10 [1[ ALL

I haven't used Mapinstall for a while, but there should be a drop down box where you select where you want the maps.

In any case a faster way of getting the maps onto a SD card is to put the card in a card reader rather than the nuvi. Mapinstall will then see the card and you can download directly to the card. Once completed you can then pop the card in the nuvi and all should be well.

The map is showing in the Garmin folder as a .gma .
In the 'get info' menu, the size is shown as 4 KB.
Does this mean that the download has failed, despite the message indicating the download was a success, bearing in mind that the only part showing on the Garmin was for a town in Poland?

The map will end in .img, the gma file is Garmin's digital certificate. Doesn't sound as though the map has installed correctly, it should take an hour or so to download Smile

Have managed to get map install to let me select the sd disk as a destination, and to click on 'continue' to install, but it only took a few seconds and again all I have on the Garmin is a small part of Poland.

I did select the whole of Europe at the top of the Map install page.

Not sure which version of Mapinstall you're using, but having selected the destination drive there is a drop down box at the bottom of the next page which allows you to select from the mapsets installed on your PC. Does the correct set show?

You then need to select which maps you want to install as the mapset is made up of many individual map tiles. The easiest way to do this is to position the cursor top left then click and drag to bottom right. Zoom way out so you can easily see the whole of the area you want.

As you do so the tiles will be outlined in yellow, and once you release the mouse button will turn black and the bar at the bottom should tell you the number of maps you've selected. If I do that for the whole of Europe the number is 309.

Have found the map tiles you mention and dragged the cursor across. Have ended up with 466.
Installation is now proceeding with about 40 mins remaining.
It looks promising.
Have just had a note to say that I don't have the latest version of Mapinstall which is ready to download.
Thank you for taking the time to assist

That sounds better, glad it's now working. Just be aware that a previous version of Mapinstall put the maps in the wrong folder on the SD card.

When the download is complete check that the new files are all in a folder named Map (note NOT Maps) on the card. If there isn't one you'll need to create it.

If all that's correct when you go to Tools, Settings, Map, Info you should see the new map listed. It needs to be ticked and the older map unticked.

Just when I thought all was well, it isn't.

The installation appeared to be completed but when i look at the map info on the Garmin I have

CN Europe NT 2103.20
[1] TIRANE, SHQIPERIA, GRAZ, OSTERREICH ,SA
[2] LEGNICA, POLSKA

CN Europe NT 2012 .10

Both maps are ticked
The Garmin HD and the GarminSD HD have maps ending in .gma.
The Garmin map is in a folder named Map.
The Garmin SD map is in a folder named Garmin
I have downloaded the latest Mapinstall and will now try installing again onto the card.
I have put a folder named Map onto the card.

Would be wise to trash the map on the sd card?
