In a reversal of their usual mode of operation, 'sat-nav' systems will be used to restrict the movement of individuals as criminals are set to become monitored by GPS.
A new law enforcement system will add GPS tracking to electronic tags fitted to criminals serving community punishments and means authorities will know the location of these individuals at all times - technology permitting.
Those who are considered high risk offenders will be monitored constantly by GPS positioning. Some of these offenders are restricted from attending certain events or areas (for instance football matches or pubs) as part of their punishment, but until now there had been few ways of monitoring whether these conditions were adhered to or not.
Under this new system an alert will be sounded if offenders break the conditions of their probation by straying into areas which are deemed as off-limits.
According to Justice Secretary Ken Clarke, the new system will keep offenders "off the street" so that they "can't socialise in the evening and have fewer chances to offend."
Clarke explained that the move is designed to tackle British crime rates more effectively by making community sentences a sterner punishment, claiming that they are currently seen as "an easy option" when it comes to the British Judicial Service.

Prison seems to me to be a very effective way of achieving this.

Who gets the contract to mark all the places on the map which are verboten? Who gets the contract to monitor it? I expect it will be paid for out of the 20% savings from cutting the police budgets.

But prison time would mean they couldn't simply pass the time away harassing their neighbours!

Erm, I don't understand your logic. They don't need to work indoors. If Mr. baddie goes out, he will be spotted and Mr. policeman will arrest him and put him in gaol where a high proportion of Mr. baddies should have been in the first place. (For PC, please read Mr, as Mrs. Master, Miss, or whatever.) |

Erm, I don't understand your logic. They don't need to work indoors.
