|
|
Hi, I have just bought a 'used' tom tom go live 750 as my first sat nav. Is there only the home software now that i should download from the website or another program to use?
I have read about first making a backup although i don't have a map update that i can claim. do i use the software to do this or in some other way?
Anything else you think i should know about getting the best out of it? Or is that too open ended a question!!
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hi kerrysr, I would suggest that the very fist thing you do is to connect your 750 to your computer, open Windows Explorer (or MAC equivalent ) create a new folder on the computer and call it something like OriginalTtBackUp. Then, ensure that you select to see all files on your TT (ie select see hidden files) and copy ALL folders and files from the TT into this new folder on the computer.
As to TThome, I would say that it all depends what you want to do with your TT? Do you want to buy new maps? subscribe to live services? change voices? etc? you shall probably have to download the latest version of Home to do this. If not, there is no need to download and install TT Home. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

thanks for those thoughts. I probably will want to update the maps as i'm not sure how up to date they are so will use home. I'll make the backup as you suggest.

Just to emphasise - Please do not make your BackUps with TThome, ever. Always use the Windows Explorer method above. It is much safer and more reliable. Perform a backup every every time prior to making a significant change to your TT i.e. before a map update, before a software change, etc. and keep them away from any folders/files TT home has access to. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Easiest way to check your maps is to go to the last page of the main menu and select "status and information" then "Version information".
That will tell you the software version and the map version.
The line for the map will say something like "Map: Europe v885.4009"
v885 is the latest map, released just a couple of weeks ago.
The version number goes up by "5" each time and they come out four times a year.
Some previous release dates are
v850 maps released 27th June 2010
v855 maps released 31st August 2010
v860 maps released 17th Nov 2010
v865 maps released 15th March 2011
v870 maps released 17th May 2011
v875 maps released 16th August 2011
v880 maps released 15th November 2011
v885 maps released 17th February 2012 _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

my current map is europe_2GB v835.2448 so looks like it is a bit older than i thought!
TT want to charge me £64 for a years worth of maps. I don't really need to update that often as i don't do time critical navigation europewide but there doesn't seem any cheaper one off update?
Have made an explorer backup and will continue to do so.
Thanks for your ideas and advice.

BTW, i have downloaded some POI's and have them in the zip file. I can't find instructions on the site about how to install them. Can you point me to the right place please?
Thanks again.

Kerry | hi kerrysr, You need to download the POI's onto your computer. Use a program to unzip them (WinRar or WinUnZip, etc.) and then transfer the expanded files to your TT placing them into the Folder that contains your map (i.e. Wester Europe or UK & ROI, etc). Disconnect the TT.
Then, on your TT scroll through the menus until you find MAnage POI and select how you want to use them. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Have you attempted to use the Latest Map Guarantee (LMG) on TT Home? Sometimes this is available on older units that haven't previously been connected to Home.
I suspect it's a long shot, but it may just allow you to download the current version of the map for your device. You won't certainly lose anything by trying! _________________ Garmin DriveSmart 50 LMT-D |

You CAN buy a single map, rather than the "update service" but it's usually about the same price as the subscription (which gives you four over a year).
Here's the page on the TT website for a single map:
https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/shop/maps/#deviceSelected=GO%20550/750
You could choose any of these...
United Kingdom & Republic of Ireland - Single Map(v8.85) 229.2 MB - £39.95
Western Europe - Single Map(v8.85) 2011.6 MB - £49.95
Full Europe - Single Map(v8.85) 2356.6 MB - £59.95
(Don't ask me why they sometimes refer to v885 maps as v8.85, it's a long story!)
The update service price is made up of two parts... a price to get you up to the current latest map, and a price for the next 4, so it's difficult for me to say how much it ends up at - they do an individual quoter depending on the age of your existing map.
You can double check the price you had, on this TT page :
https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/shop/mapupdateservice/index.jsp
(although I think it may just tell you to launch TT Home!)
So buying just a UK map as an addition might be a better bet if most of your driving is in the UK and you don't mind the Europe ones being a bit out of date. However, depending on the remaining space on your internal memory, you might have to factor in a new SD card to put it on
Choices, choices, it's all up to you! _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

I seem to remember that it was once said ( by dhn? methinks) that it was possible to buy a map without going via TTHome. If correct, is that still an option? _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

You can BUY a map from the TT website, but it still needs Home to download it, because that's when the "key" files are generated to lock it to your individual device.
Having done that download, if anything goes wrong with the subsequent automatic install, then that can be done manually instead. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Thanks, some interesting thoughts from you all. I have tried a latest map guarantee update but it didn't like that! Obviously been used already. I did find the single map update page and saw it is slightly cheaper to buy a UK map, for example, then thought i would getter better value from a slightly more expensive update for a year.
Have made the backup and will carry on as needed.
Cheers everybody!
