I am still using my original TT GO 530 with map guarantee, which suits my purposes well, and have no need to update to newer model at this time.
Having lived in France some time ago (when I had a Navman) I now have retired in UK so GB maps are all I really need for everyday use.
There are occasions when It would be useful to have European maps If only for reference or infrequent trips abroad
I am considering buying a preloaded TT sd card containing "Maps of Western/Central Europe IQ Routes v8.30"..I appreciate that this card has outdated maps on it but would be ok for reference.
If I do buy this card can someone advise me whether I will be able to continue to use existing GB maps on unit, and also can I only receive GB map updates, which is all I will need updated

Yes and Yes.

The Go530 is capable of using the internal memory and the SD card slot at the same time, so you can have maps in both places and switch between them using the menus.

Also if you're referring to MapShare updates, they only get downloaded for the map you have currently got selected for use.

But...May I add a couple of suggestions though?

Firstly, the Europe map INCLUDES the UK, so you wouldn't need both.

Secondly, a v8.70 map on SD card is £69.95
But a downloaded v880 map of all Europe is £44.95 and a 4GB SDHC card is only a couple of pounds.

SO why do you want to get it on SD when a download is MUCH cheaper?

Also, with a downloaded map you could opt for the 1 year subscription if you fancied it, which probably wouldn't cost much more than a single download.

Finally, a Go730 is getting on a bit now, and there's a possibility that the internal memory may fail sometime. If you bought a 4 or even 8GB SDHC card now, you'd be able to run EVERYTHING off the card if the need arose.

(Make sure you have a good backup of the whole TomTom internal memory (done with Windows Explorer), just in case).

Ah... sorry... I've just re-read your post and see you're talking about an SD card with v8.30 maps... so not one bought new from TomTom!

So my economics might not hold true.. and I see now why you might want to keep the UK map (if it's more up to date than the v8.30 Europe map).

How much are they asking for that card, and can you be SURE it's an original card?

There are lots of hacked maps around on eBay which may well not work on your device (as you probably know, maps are locked to a particular device or a particular SD card in the case of maps bought on a card).

Andy,
Thanks for your thoughts,
The card I have in mind is a sealed TT unit thru Amazon warehouse deals at £25, so I assume it is genuine and ok.

If that is the case then, from your replies I should be able to keep my existing GB maps up to date with the TT Map Update Service via TT HOME, when available. which is obviously cheaper than keeping Europe maps updated, which will be unnecessary.
I don't use mapshare
I do have a spare 4gb SD card (10) , so will copy everything to this if I go ahead.

Cool. That all seems to make sense to me.

Just use "switch map" go switch between them and always make sure you're on the GB map when you connect to Home for subscription updates.

Any particular reason you don't use MapShare? Don't you trust it (even on "strict")?

A pre-loaded SF card containing a map from TomTom will be locked to the SD cards ID, you can't copy this data to another card as it won't work due to the other card having a different ID.

Leave your UK&ROI map on the internal memory and simply put the European map card in the slot, you can select between the maps using the Change Preferences/ Manage Maps/ Switch Maps - Mike

Was that mention of the SD card as somewhere to put the backup I suggested?
If so.... no need. Just keep it on your PC (or burn it to a DVD if you're short of space.

Thank you both,
I will go along with my initial thoughts, and keep the spare sd card for music etc.
I do in fact use strict mapshare, just forgotten. Age I'm afraid.
