|
|
The latest version of NAVIGON's iPhone navigation app has been released this morning. It's a firm favourite of ours with detailed maps, lots of features and an intuitive UI.
NAVIGON 2.0 improves on the existing featureset with a new streamlined user interface and a new feature, MyMaps. This allows you to install only those maps that you want/need. If you purchase the Europe or US version, no longer do you need to devote a huge swathe of your limited storage space to maps of countries or states that you'lll never visit. Instead you can choose which maps you need.
Version 2.0 also included a free map update. Existing owners can grab the update here. NAVIGON British Isles is £44.99.

Quote: | What's New In Version 2.0
- Fully refined and even easier to use UI
- Free map update for all
- MyMaps: Install only the maps you need* |
The most noticeable changes to the app is it's reduced size from several Gigs to just 45Mb!
Navigon has now given the user the option to only download the maps they need and can swap and change when needed. However this is now done by downloading the critical files and maps directly to the iOS device. I would suggest not updating the app unless you have a Power supply and about 20Min to spare.
(149.7Mb for UK map & 197.1Mb critical files)
All things considered it is looking good and I for one will be giving it a go on my way home tonight! _________________ Dom

Following update to v2.0 all i got was "Failed to connect to Navigon Server, please restart the app"
Restarting the app didn't help.
Restarting the iPhone didn't help.
The solution (for me a least) was to delete the app and re-download/install, after which I was able to connect and download the maps. |

I was under the impression when originally purchasing the previous version that map updates were included in the one off app purchase. From what I can see future map updates are covered by a further in app purchase option Fresh Maps at £21.99?
Is this correct or am I misunderstanding? If it is correct then it does call into question the value of assurances regarding free future upgrades on all apps.
I have had a similar problem with my novus piccollo speed camera device which louldy promised free updates for life but now it appears that updates have been 'discontinued' however I notice the unit is still on sale and still proclaims the free updates for life! contacted navigon to ask for details and received no reply.

I can't remember the exact wording but the other day when I opened Navigon it showed a page explaining the map update issue. It basically said that since launch there had been 8 updates to the app which included map updates.
The way they described the FreshMaps in-app purchase / subscription was that you would get more regular map updates - 3-4 a year (as opposed to, perhaps 1 per year).
Basically, maps cost them money and I always wondered when they would start charging for maps - perhaps it's only now because of the more recent in-app subs etc that it makes it programmatically easier to handle?
Plus, I don't recall EVER seeing that map updates would always be free - that was only ever an assumption that when the app was updated they would also update the maps.

Maybe it's all in the wording. The app itself will remain free for updates, but the in app purchases can be changed at any time. _________________ Dom

I can't find the page now that I read last weekend but it mentioned the life expectancy of the current version, approx. 2 years. It said that the one-off in-app payments are valid for the life of the version i.e. 2 years. I don't think it's a bad deal at all. |
