I can assure you that the POI symbols are not resized by POI Loader.

The predefined POI symbols are PNG icons of 32x32 pixels. You can see this when extracting the symbols from the firmware using GIR_Editor (see my site in the signature).

For me, the only reason why the map symbols are small is because of the high resolution of the screen (800x480). That makes a huge difference. Before that, the POI symbols were only 16 or 24 pixels and it was enough. I think Garmin did not anticipated how small they would be.

On the 34xx, they are much bigger but it depnds where you see them. On the 3D map, they can be as big as 45x45. Elsewhere like in the Favorites icon select menu, they are still at 32x32.

For fun, I scaled the predefined map symbol for "Home" from 32x32 to 48x48. It's a bit soft because I just upscaled it, but not that bad Here's what it looks like compared to other POI symbols:

I used GIR_Editor to replace the symbols on the 37xx in the fw1_resources.bin file. You cannot do this yourself as the program will not accept a different resolution. I tweaked numbers manually, but this can be a feature I will add in the future.

On the map, it looks nice as well. Going bigger than this could be too crowded.

Well done Very Happy thats encouraging - is it possible to manipulate the icons which have been imported onto the device as Custom POI icons - are they also in the fw1_resources.bin file

No, only the predefined map symbols.

The Custom POI map symbols are imported by POI Loader and included in your .gpi files. You could try to use symbols that are larger than 24x24 pixels for your POI. If I remember correctly, any map symbols larger than 24x24 were cropped automatically to 24x24. I need to try this again to double check, or you can try this by yourself too.

Edit: are you using the US firmware v4.50? For the predefined POIs, I could make a new firmware with bigger icons.

I'm pretty sure bigger icons have been tried as Custom POI before (that would have been an easy fix!) but Ill have a go with the 44x44 icons from http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/speed-camera-icons.php and let you know for sure.

My firmware is v4.50 I assume UK.

yep using the 44 icons POI Loader clips them and only shows the top LH corner square of the icon. This is the same for icon on the map or the proximity alert.

Most recent reply to Garmin in response to their change suggestion:

Thanks for your assistance, although there is nothing there that really means anything!!

Please can you clarify exactly which icons you would be requesting to be made bigger.
What is the process for this - can I track it via a ticket number?
At what point would it be decided that no progress will be made or the request is refused?

I think we have established that there is a failure in the design process to consider the full effect of the change in resolution and the appearance of the tiny icons. I would say that this is a fault, rather than a request for improvement, and so should be given more attention.

A request for improvement would be that Custom POI Icons should be visible on the map at up to 0.8mi zoom, and this should be configurable via a tick box for each Custom POI set that is installed. It is for the user to decide when he wants to see his own Custom POI Icons!!!

Based on this I think you have a point and something Garmin overlooked when releasing a higher resolution unit.
