540 live freezes in middle of handsfree calls.

My 540 Live has developed a very annoying habit! It frequently, but not every time, freezes when I'm using it for hands-free 'phone calls.

Most frequently the freeze occurs within about two seconds of me answering an in-coming call. (I very rarely make outgoing calls whilst driving.)

My caller can still hear me, apparently, but I can hear nothing, and the Sat-Nav screen is frozen. All I can do is hold the power button for the required 20 seconds to make the unit restart from scratch.

The 540 is linked via Bluetooth to my Blackberry, which re-connects automatically once the 540 has restarted.

This can be a real pain, as the timing of the various elements can get me into a loop:
1) I receive a call, and accept it.
2) The 540 freezes.
3) I press the power button for 20 seconds
4) The 540 restarts
5) Bluetooth re-connects
6) My caller meanwhile, having been cut off, calls me again.
7) I accept the call
8) The 540 freezes
9) Here we go again! Evil or Very Mad

I've posted this fault on Tomtom's site, but had no useful response.

Anyone else experienced this?

The 540 Live is running App 9.058.568435.1, OS 541764
GPS v1.20, Boot 5.5120

A fairly common problem, I'm afraid, usually when Traffic and handsfree are both used on the same device.

Reset is only a temporary fix (and in your case hardly even that!).

Try.....

1. Clearflash.exe - Download from TomTom, HERE.. Run it at least three times. NOTE, it's a strange bit of software which doesn't look much like it's doing anything, just keep having a go with it until you're satisfied you've been from start to finish of the windows and clicks at leasat three times - do it again a few times if you're not sure. It never says "Watch me doing stuff" and never says "I've done something". You just assume that when it offers you the chance to run it, it has run it already.

2. Find and delete the file gnsdata - it's in the gns folder and will be recreated automatically. If it won't delete, it's corrupt and needs getting rid of anyway - I haven't needed to do it for ages (because I stopped using TT for handsfree phone calls due to this very problem), but I think to delete it you may have to rename it or struggle some other way.

3. Copy everything to your computer then delete everything, reformat (full format, not quick) and do a checkdisk and let it fix anything, then reformat again. Then copy everything back again. IF YOU'RE A COMPUTER NOVICE, DON'T DO THIS THIRD ONE.

Try these one at a time to see if one fixes it, then if not, do all three.

But to be honest, the true cure is to use some other handsfree solution, not TT. It was brilliant on my GO700, but on all subsequent models (up to the 550, I don't know about the new wonder models 100x) has been useless.

Do a search for gnsdata and you'll find it has been responsible for many a sin!

I've run the Clearflash several times, no problem.

I cannot find anything in the gns folder, apart from one file called TmcEApi.iso
Should I still expect to find gnsdata somewhere?

Sorry, it's so long ago that I did away with this problem by stopping using TT for handsfree that I can't remember too well the various fixes.

Try some more searches for handsfree freezing, I'm sure the steps I've suggested helped a bit - the checkdisk and format look like the only remaining ones for you (providing you're comfortable with them).

I gave up using the sat nav as handsfree for a number of reasons, mainly the unreliability but also the poor volume as its forced to use the built in speaker rather than the cars sound system.
There are a number of different BT Handfree systems, have a look at the ones from Parrot and iO-Play (I use the iO unit and find it very good in use, you can have the phone handsfree through the car system and the TomTom audio through the car system using the 540's Bluetooth audio output) - Mike
