Hi my names Barry (Baz) I am work in it for that deals with GPS tracking of vehicles as well as other things.
I have just purchased TomTom and a Dell Axim x5
I am yet to recieve my Axim but have TomTom. Speaking to a installer at walk he has said the GPS unit should work placed under the dash of the car. I have installed it this way but just thought I'd get your guys opinions on this as the TomTom reciever may not be good enough to cope with this.
Is it possible to purchase a third party GPS antenna that will plug into the connection on my in car cradle (RJ11) as I would like to be able to move it into the hire cars I get quickly.
Also does anybody know if you can get a non curly power supply for the cradle as I would like to install it into a 12v connection in my glove box.
Finally any advice for setting the unit up intially and first use?
Cheers people

Your man at work is a GPS installer - he should know what he's talking about I would have thought! I often carry mine in the glove box with excellent results.
Why not ask him to source you the materials and/or knowhow to link your power from the glovebox to the cradle. Why waste such a useful source of expertise??
If you want a GPS receiver with an RJ11 conection, then the market is flooded with the excellent Tomtom standard receiver manufactured by Leadtek and I doubt you can find much better.

Cheers, the equipment that we deal with is quite different from the tomtom stuff and he said he is sure it would work but wasnt a 100%. Have been sitting looking at the cradle for a day now just waiting for the Axim to turn up. Will have a look around for another GPS anntena there about £60 on ebay is that about right?

I'm sure you'll get another antenna for that price, although the TomTom one will work absolutely fine under the dash (as long as it isn't under any metal and your windscreen doesn't block the signals).
As for the curly cable, the really simple way is to get your installer guy to snip the end off of the curly cable and re-attach it to a straight cable. It could then be wired into your ignition. |

Could make one - just buy the appropriate connector from RS or someone. Or search around a bit - I don't think Tomtom do them any more but they might be worth a call. |
