The second straight jack plug type RDS receiver has just failed on my 720.

Firstly how can I open it up to check continuity to see if it is a broken wire?

And secondly, is the later USB type worth using?

Thanks

To open the receiver I use a knife and split the unit along the seam so both halves seperate, as for checking the wires if you have a meter for continuity check each of the four wires to the free plug, note two wires go to the center pin and two others go to the inner face of the outer ring surrounding the pin. The connector is actually a six pole plug of which four contacts are used for the RDS unit.

As for the Mini USB receiver its as good as the later round plug types but it will lose signal if you de-power the car charger socket such as when stopping for fuel. The old oval shape units would maintain power taking voltage from the device, the newer Mini USB RDS units take power from the car only - Mike

A common failure is the centre pin of the jack plug coming out and getting lost.

Thanks Mike,

It looks like the cable to the plug is shot - only one of the four wires has continuity. Will I get away with recabling to the plug? If so can somebody tell me which pins the red and black wires are attached to as, when I cut open the plug, these two got detached?
