Chaps

A friend has given me an old 720 that stopped working. He had it given to him. It basically would not boot up. It would not connect to a computer unless I got lucky and when it did, it showed both drives (hdd and sd card) as being present. BUT, when I clicked on the HDD, which shows up a a removable disk, I get the message Please insert a disk into the removable disk (GSmile. Hum?

It does seem as if there is a problem with the hard disk, which I'll have a go at later. But I assume, although I have not done it, that I can try and download navcore and install it and just run the unit from the SD card if the hdd is indeed knackered? Would that be feasible? And presumably, I would need a 2meg card to match the hdd in the 720?

Thanks

It'll take an SDHC card up to a lotta GB (32?). It would be better to get more than 2GB. However, if you've got a spare 2GB hanging around, use it to see if you can get the thing up and running again. With a successful device, you can then get a decent SDHC card for it - say 4 or 8GB Class 6. SD/SDHC card boots up by default priority over the internal.

Cheers Dennis.

Going to go back to basics and install navcore 8.351 onto the SD card and see if I can get her booting.

Interestingly, the actual G drive (which is the TT hdd) will not even let me format it. It just says to insert a disk into drive G and try again - which seems to indicate the actual thing is knackered. But if I can get it to work from a SD card, I at least have a chance of reinstalling some maps etc and seeing if they can be made to work....

I've not seen a unit with a failed hdd like this before

The internal memory is not an actual hard-drive or similar, but a bunch of memory chips on the main circuit board, so forget any ideas of replacing it.

It's not that uncommon for the internal memory to die. My 720 did exactly the same thing. In fact it died slowly over a few days, producing more and more bizarre effects.
For example, I could save a file onto it using Windows Explorer and I could read the file back from it OK while still connected; but after I'd removed the 720 from the PC then reconnected it , the file would be gone.
At first it let me reformat, but eventually, I couldn't do that either

As Dennis says, just get an SD card and reload everything onto that.
I've successfully continued using my 720 ever since.

Only the x10 series had hard drives (which you can actually replace).

As was already mentioned the flash based memory has only a limited number of write cycles, and most likely no protection against local wear (higher end flash memory is making sure all memory cells get an even amount of erase/write cycles).

Don't like to contradict the staff but my 510 does not have a hard drive either, but the 910 does.

True, only the 910 had a Hard Disk, the 510/710 had SD Cards for storage.

Go-700 had small 2,5GB capacity HDD which some users have converted to CF card when the drive failed.

Go-910 had a 20GB capacity hard drive almost the same size in area as the screen, two different types of HDD were fitted to the 910 during its production run and they are not interchangeable as the mylar ribbon cable between the device main PCB and HDD was different for each variant - Mike
