Improving the radio reception of TMC

I'm pleased with my Garmin 1490T but the green traffic button is often grey. My journeys are often up and down the A1 Dishforth to Barton and as the new motorway takes shape I think traffic data will be ever more important. My car has an athermic windscreen which doesn't help.
Anyone any advice on connecting the Garmin antenna lead to the back of the radio so the car antenna (in the heated rear window element) can give me a stronger TMC signal?
