TomTom One v1 touchscreen playing up

My TomTom One is a couple of years old now.
Recently it has started to think that I'm pressing the screen when I'm not, always near the top right of the screen.
Out of desperation on one long journey I put it in the fridge for a while, and then it worked normally for about ten minutes.
I paid quite a lot for all of the Europe maps and a SD card to store them a year or two back, so I don't really want to just dump it.
Any suggestions?

Firstly if you have a screen protector fitted remove it - I have seen these cause similar faults. - If not run the corner of a sheet of paper around the edge of the screen, feed it in between the screen and surounding plastic then move it all the way around the edge - if any debris has got lodged in the small gap this can cure the fault - Mike

If all else fails, check your purchase date. It's got a TWO year guarantee, so you might be just in time to get a free repair.

I tried the corner of a piece of paper trick
Some dirt did come out
In fact the tomtom then worked perfectly for about half an hour but then the screen started pressing itself
I found the original box and instructions, but not the receipt Sad

I really have no way of knowing when I bought it.
I think it might have been Jan 2006, but without proof of purchase am I going to get any joy from TomTom?
I think that my inlaws paid for it with their non-uk credit card so I won't get any joy there either.
It was bought from Argos.
The original UK map is v605.0 if that proves anything.

TomTom will definitely want a proof of purchase (usually a photocopy or scan of the receipt), I'm afraid.

how hard is it to get the front bezel off to give it and the screen a really good clean?

I sent an email to TomTom support stating my situation and their reply was basically that without a receipt I could $od off.

However, I tried a more agressive clean by shoving a business card down the gap between the screen and the bezel and wiping it around, and the tomtom seems to be fixed. I drove for an hour with the demister on hot to heat it up, and then left it on in the office for another 2 hours and got no false screen presses at all.

Thanks for the advice, I never would have though that it could just be dirt under the bezel.

my touch screen problems returned yesterday
I was driving to Seville in Southern spain with the sun shining through the windscreen. AC was switched on the in the car but I'm sure that the TomTom was suffering in the direct sun
I had been driving for about two hours when the TomTom went nuts. it got progressively worse until it became unusable
I stopped and cleaned out any dirt that I could find trapped under the bezel, but it didn't seem to help.
Seven hours later driving back the other way in the dark the TomTom worked perfectly.
I dismantled the TomTom (actually removed the guts from the plastic housing) and found very little dirt on the screen. Also there seems to be quite a gab between the bezel and touch screen. Even pressing down hard on the edge of the bezel towards the screen doesn't cause it think that the screen has been pressed.
I'm fairly convinced that the extreme heat in Southern Spain in August is pushing this unit beyond it's capabilities.
Is there now any more knowledge on what the problem is?
Maybe I need to make a foil heat shield for use down here or something

Do you think the temperature might have got to 50-60deg on the dash?

if you leave anything in the sun here it becomes too hot to touch fairly quickly
the temperature here was 41 deg C today in the shade
earlier this week I burned my finger pressing the button to open the boot on my father-in-law's car
the aircon was set to 22 deg C but I have no idea how hot the back/top of the tomtom would be
I also read about some other units becoming overheated when charging
maybe I should use it on battery power only when I'm here

I've sort of had an idea...

I was reading about the athermic windscreen on one of my other cars and how it blocks the GPS signal. The suggestion for some devices is to put a bluetooth GPS receiver in the back window and use that instead.

My TomTom has bluetooth, can it connect to an external GPS antenna?

If so then I could make a reflective heat shield to keep the sun off of the unit which would block the GPS signal I guess, but then use either an external antenna or a bluetooth antenna to get around that.

For a shield I could just get one of those cheap reflective windscreen shields things, or maybe that stuff that some people put behind radiators, and cut a square out and then fix it to the tomtom windscreen sucker

Personally, I would look at mounting the device lower down in the car where it isn't in direct sunlight. Depending on your car model, there are various mounts from several manufacturers that could fit the bill. Some ideas from Arkon include mounts attached to the lighter socket or cup holder.

Athermic windscreens are not the problem they used to be as later chipsets can 'see' the signal through them.
