Well I am back..

My 740L has been doing Stirling service for the past couple of months -- I knew it was too good to last..

When it is working -- it is the best..
all the live commands -- talks to you --

But -- It has been back to Scotland twice early on in the year for repair and I honestly thought it was "fixed"

Couple of weeks ago I noticed that during a journey it would suddenly turn OFF and restart
-- the trouble was that it was navigating BACK to my start point..
OK could live with that...
However the next was "drifting off" in to the Fields
-- even though it was an old built up area.
the Next was lost Icon of the Phone.-- and no phone service

Then I lost all my "Live" services - and that is what the LIVE is all about - the services
Next was switching off completely..
Did all the recommended things
-- followed the Emails to the letter from Tom-tom help --
Did countless "soft boots"

Then on Sunday -- it died -- wouldn't even start... even though when plugged in to the car showed it a green light on the button.

The Tom-tom help desk want me to try some more things
-- but HOW - when the thing wont even turn on
-- or even connect to the computer..

740L died -- Sunday 13th November -- age 7 months..
RIP...

Thank goodness I had my old Classic in the glove compartment..

What do you do now --- been away twice already -- would you trust it again..

I would not be a happy bunny if my TomTom had died after only 7 months.
Who did you buy it from ?

My missus had ( repeated ) trouble with her laptop and after the second time it went back for repair she was told that if it went back a third time , within the first year , then it would be replaced with a brand new one.
It did and she was...................she picked a different make for the replacement too.

I would DEFINITELY be going back to where I brought it from to get it sorted.

Good luck , I hope you get it sorted !

TomToms dont die.
Re your device turning off and on randomly.
If the device cannot connect to the live services the device reboots and attempts to re connect for a second time and so on.
The bootloader has a lot to do with whether the device chooses to connect to your computer or not.
Try reloading the entire contents or your device on to a card and see if your device starts thus eliminating an internal issue.
I have numourous devices and never been beat yet.

That would be great if you could turn it on -- or even connect it to the computer -- also the 740L don't have a card..
I will have to see what the Netherlands - Amsterdam say tomorrow --
-- For the amount of £££'s I paid I don't want to have or think I should have to fight or be "beat"
-- I just want a product that works for a reasonable length of time --

I would think 18 months or a year.. at least.. should be a reasonable time..

cliffbrown & Fibre this is why I get most of my devices from Halfords, Maplin, PC World etc. Local shops where it goes back and where I can thump the table for refunds and exchanges. No way will I let any of my kit go off to TT's "repair" shop. I realise the local shop spotty assistants know nothing (the latest one told me that routers contain modems!), so I'm not getting help from them - I don't want help, I just want an exchange or refund and I won't take no for an answer - they don't know as much as I do about TomTom devices, so there's no way they can palm me off with silly guess excuses.

Just been told by Mark -- at TT support in Amsterdam that they are going to escalate my 740L to level 3..
what ever that means..

I think they will have it back and send me a new one --- Laughing YOU BET !!!

If they do the problem is that I will have lost all my Poi's and favourites..

My son did make a windows explorer copy of the 740 a couple of months ago so I might be able to get some of the things from there..
what is the name of the favourites file?? thay I have to look for

Favourites are stored within the MapSettings.cfg file which is located in the Western_Europe map folder, if I were you I would have a read of the FAQ page and look at the last FAQ in the list as that details how to convert your Favourites file to a custom POI file which is a far more robust method to store locations - Mike

wowo this is really happening -- downloaded a label to send the 740L back to Hertogenbosch..

just got to go and get a box to put it in -- some bubble wrap etc then ring the UPS people and they will collect it tomorrow -- got to put in a proof of purchase and the docking stations for the car and computer.. etc..

they say it might take up to 5 days !! to fix or replace

I do hope it comes back with the proper maps etc.. I have 810.1943 at the moment but I have been told that I should have a later version 825 ??
and more importantly the LIVE services

So far the service has been good -- lets hope it stays this way..
