First time poster, but I've scoured the forums for a while and still haven't been able to find an answer for this.

Many GPSs are advertised as Bluetooth capable. Does that mean they can pair up with just about any bluetooth device? Or does that depend on the model?

As I understand, the BT in navigation units is for pairing with cell phones or the car's audio system. Can the Bluetooth in navigational units be used as a GPS receiver as well??

Ideally, I'd want an all-in-one GPS that I can take with me hiking or do some directional navigation, but they don't seem to exist (the car units tend to be more delicate).

THe next best choice would be a GPS used for just hiking (these are called handhelds?) that has bluetooth for me to pair it up with a laptop or PDA with mapping software installed for when we go driving. So a bit like a combination of a handheld GPS and a GPS receiver. Is this possible?

hi chut.im in a bit of a similar position myself.ive got a blue tooth reciever and i AM able to use it on my laptop and my phone(at least it finds it on a scan).not sure if i can do it at the same time though.however my main problem is finding a mapping system to use on my phone(viewty)reliably, tagged to bt reciever.im having a bit of trouble with amaze, this forum is very helpful so an answer will be around somewhere.the best place ive found that has any specific relevance is ...blue unplugged....if you do a google search,it will come up.they started their business based on b.tooth technology.its not all compatable but they could answer your questions.write them down as you think of them though, its a mine field.good luck and post your findings, answers may be useful to someone else too...jim...
