Nav software for a Blackberry

Hi,
My wife has recently bought a Blackberry 8900 - against my advice as to get a windows mobile phone. It has a built in GPS receiver but I don't seem to be able to find any stand alone nav software for it. Does anyone know of nav software for a blackberry other than the sort which downlaods maps via the mobile phone network.

look at VGPS DigitalMobileMap

Garmin XT is a software product that may work - I don't know if they do it for the blackberry though.

Garmin mobile for Blackberry is excellent. I've used it for about 3 months alongside Telenav. Available direct from Garmin for about $100 for a lifetime (of the device) subscription.

I'd concur, Garmin XT is one of if not the best nav app available on a BB.

Is Garmin XT installed on an SD card on the phone like TomTom?

No, you'll find all BB nav apps are over the air types so you download and install the application and then maps are downloaded as required.

I'm not aware of a BB nav app that runs entirely from a card.

Oh dear. Just confirms my opinion that BB are a load of rubbish compared to WM devices - they look nice and that's about it!
GPS signals are available almost everywhere, mobile phone signals are iffy or non existant in many areas. What happens when the phone can't get a signal to downoad maps - you're lost?

Not quite. When you plan a route it will download and cache the maps needed. There aren't many places now where you cannot get a signal.

I suspect BB apps are offered in this way because the vast majority of BB's have all inclusive data plans. It ensures you always have the latest map. But having said that, it is a shame that on-board solutions are not available.

BB's are primarily email centric devices and in that regard they cannot be beaten.

Each to their own I guess. I still prefer email on my BB to the service on a WM device or my iPhone. Any business deploying BB's on a large scale would be using BB's Enterprise Servers anyway which integrate with Exchange.

Anyway, drifting OT, the answer to your original Q is no, there are no on-board nav solutions for BB.

Just to pick up on this post, as I have bought a BB Curve 8900 to replace my HTC Touch Pro.

Can you use our speed cams and any traffic updates?
