Corrupt XL IQ Routes

I purchased an XL IQ Routes on 22 April. One of the first things that I did was to back it up, using both the TT facility and Windows Explorer, to my 1 year old Dell Vostro Laptop.
Last night I decided to update the POIs and plugged it into my Laptop. The first thing that I noticed was that in Windows Explorer most of the files had unusual characters in their File Names and other atttibutes. The second thing that I noticed was that TT Home would not start. The cursor just kept flashing. I tried power cycling the XL IQ but it would not start saying that there was no map.
After rebooting both the XL IQ and my Laptop and checking in Windows Explorer again I decided that I would have to Format the XL IQ Drive and restore the files from the Explorer backup.
The full FAT32 format took over 90 minutes.
Copying the files from my Laptop took another 55 minutes .
The XL IQ was then able to operate, however, TT Home still would not start-up. I had to uninstall then install it again to get it working. Everything was now working, except that I noticed that the XL IQ drive had 8 files on it called data*.chk This file suffix implies that they are ‘Recovered File Fragments’.
My questions are:
1. Should the Format take 90 minutes? Normal 2 GB SD cards take a fraction of that time.
2. Should it really take 55 minutes to copy 1.69 GB of files to the TT Drive? Normal 2 GB SD cards take a fraction of that time.
3. Are these data*.chk files anything to worry about?
4. Should I delete these data*.chk files?

Never having had to format a device, I'm not sure how long it should take though that does sound excessive.

As for the .chk files, they are part of the TomTom system and should NOT be deleted. Microsoft uses that extension for one thing, TomTom for another.

Being on the end of a USB connection will slow down file/drive activity quite a bit - still 90 mins is a long time - but as it appears to have found some 'problems' perhaps it was struggling to format the drive?

Is your laptop USB 1.1 or USB 2?

There should be data*.chk files in the root directory.

It can take a long time to write to the TT device but I cannot comment on the format. Ihave just done some read tests on the 530 internal memory on a USB2 port and I am only reading at 2.75MB/s. Writing is usually slower

Corrupted file structures on a TomTom are usually caused by unplugging it from the PC without using the TT-Home "disconnect device" function or the Windows "safely remove device" function.

Thank you for the info everyone.
My PC is USB 2.0 . The SD Card format time is taken from the Vostro's built-in Card Reader, and from my TT GO 720 which went up in smoke a couple of weeks ago.
Can't say that I can remember removing the TT without using one of the correct methods, but...

An 'interesting' reply from TomTom when I asked the same questions -

You can safely delete those files without incident.

When I have more time I might try a full Windows Explorer backup then deleting these files.

The advice did come from TomTom. I've questioned this with them and they've changed their mind. They now say they 'comprise the part of the POI files'.

My GO 940 copies data to my laptop at a rate of around 6.6 MB/sec and writes it back at a rate of 3.2 MB/sec if thats any help to you!

The Go models use USB2 but I believe all the ONE models even the newest ones still use USB 1, so they will be much slower than Falkirk's figures.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. Looks like USB 1 on the XL IQ explains it even if it does seem amazing that TT still use USB 1.
