Yes with a caveat. The ONE's operate from internal or external memory but not both. You will need to install the application AND US map to SD card.

With an SD card inserted it will boot from that, remove it and it boots from internal memory.

Other units such as the x20/x30/x40's can use both memories at the same time. Much simpler but it's a minor inconvenience.

Thanks - can you tell me what the easiest way of copying the app to the card is?

My guess is

Backup device to PC
Copy backup to SD card
Replace map and poi elements on SD with US ones?

Sound about right or am I missing something?

Cheers again
Jim

That's perfect, that way if it works with your current map on the card you know it'll work once you buy the US map. Get a big enough card and you can have both maps on the SD card and forget the internal memory. SD card memory is dirt cheap now.

Thanks again! I think going with both maps on a big SD card is the way forward.

Is there a size limit for SD cards in terms of what the device can read? For example, I know some older card readers folk have here at work don't work with SD over 2GB.

I think I'm right in saying that 4Gb will work, not sure about larger sizes.

A 4GB card will work but it must *not* be SDHC (most 4GB cards are SDHC)

Here are links to three decent manufacturer's non-SDHC cards:

Kingston

Sandisk (with bizarre built in USB Adapter!)

Transcend

I'm a bit out of touch with the latest specs, but some of the ONE models have cut down system software that had disabled the Itinerary function. It can't be loaded afterwards.

So, if Itinerary planning is something you want to do in advance, make sure the model you buy can actually do this.

I don't know if this affects all ONEs or even if it affects the XL etc.

I went to the USA in Feb and used my GO700. It was fine. If you buy the USA map before you go, you can still plan routes in the UK. Just use the A-B Prepare Route button in the preferences - once you have loaded the USA map via Manage Maps/Switch map.

Andy why do you say this?

I have a Sandisk 4GB SDHC in my 720 and it works perfectly.

Look at the device the chap is using that Andy is replying to, its a One XL and these do not support SDHC unlike your 720, getting a decent capacity card to work with the One XL isn't too easy as there are very manufactures supplying anything other than SDHC these days - Mike

Thanks for stepping in Mike, I'd gone out for the evening...

Yes, mrfreeze, ONLY the x20, x30 and x40 ranges can use SDHC cards
(see TomTom's page HERE for confirmation.

Here is a site that is with amazon.com that is selling 920 for $230.00 USNEW I believe . and if you are buying new you should be able to update both N/A and C/W EU maps.

That might be a problem too.
Most UK buyers have been able to get both WE and NA maps updated free under the latest map guarantee (sometimes only after moaning at customer services), but most US users HAVEN'T been able to get the WE, even after a fight.

Andy
That isn't 100 % correct I live in NA and bought my 920 with the special that they had on with one year free map updates and I have received every new map since I bought the unit last year including 8.25 N/A and C/W EU.
I realize this is the exception to the rule as most units weren't sold with the one year map guarantee.

Thanks for the update...
The LMG and the "Free one year's updates" are presumably two completely different things as far as TomTom are concerned. I don't live in the US, so I can only go on reports from people on the forums but they seemed to agree that TomTom refused outright to honour the WE maps on American TomToms under the LMG..

Very few here in NA get both map updates without a hassle from TT. You are correct (again) Andy.
