How about adding visual bus lane cameras to the camera database.
Some in the south do like to take £80+ if you are unlucky to be caught.

The place that would be used as the reference would be the start of the lane and not the camera itself (to be on the safe side - you do not know how they are set up!). I have some to go if this is taken up.

Some buses have cameras themselves but this cannot be proved, or this could be a secondary file. Idea Question

This has been discussed before and is not something we will be doing. You shouldn't be driving in bus lanes Laughing

And yes, you shouldn;t be speeding either but it's far easier to accidentally be a few mph over the limit than it is to accidentally try beat a traffic jam by driving in the bus lane!!

By that logic we shouldn't have red light cameras in the database either...

A number of subscribers don't install them. But there is a groundswell of movement to change quite a few of them to RedSpeed, i.e. both redlight and speed cameras combined.

Before I became a Verifier for pgpsw, I never installed the 70mph cameras, on the logic that I didn't need to be reminded that the absolute maximum national speed limit is 70mph.

The point about bus lane cameras is the word "lane". It's not just a simple line across the road, but a great big wide lane, always marked off by a very wide white line and often the entire lane is different colour tarmac - you simply cannot avoid noticing it.

The inclusion of RedLight cameras and Speed Cameras is in line with the Government policy of making these locations be available to the public, be that in the form of a printed list, website or database download.

As far as i can see Bus Lane Cameras are NOT included in that list of camera types.

Bus lane cameras could be tricky to get an accurate database.
There are the obvious dedicated bus lane cameras, but a large number of councils also use the cctv cameras to do the job as well.
I can think of two where I live that monitor bus lanes, box junctions, bus only right turns as well as what cctv usually does, thefts , car parks, shoppping centres etc.

I don't think an accurate database would be that easy to set up and monitor.
My 2 bobs worth anyway.

Not sure about "proof" but in Brum, there's a CCTV camera pointing forward in front of the driver's console on quite a few buses. Shocked

Good point Gerry, a large number of buses in London have several cameras on them, internal, front and back. They do monitor the vehicles in front and behind, whether they are doing wrong or not.
Not sure of exact companies, but a very high percentage of Ariva and First buses have them.

I really wish they had a light-up sign saying "USE BUS LANE" or "DO NOT USE" rather then those stupid signs that take too long to read and are often badly worded (for permanent ones we have some that say "24 hours" and some that say "at any time" and some with nothing, but the timed ones are a nightmare to work out.

When they are not in force I make a point of driving in them but spend my whole life coming up behind people pootling along at 20 in the outside lane.

Andy_P has hit the nail on the head.

Bus lanes are sign posted in such a poor and confusing way that most drivers never use them even when they legally can. With modern illuminated signs giving councils all sorts of signage options, there really is no excuse for not making them clearer.

Doing so would help congestion while at the same time reduce emmisions.

As for bus lane cameras added onto the database, then I too feel that this would be unworkable. Also, do not forget that bus lane camera's are not placed for casualty reduction.

NOTE; I know full well that we all should mindlessly be chanting the safety mantra that "speed kills". I actually believe that it's bad driving that kills. Speed may be a factor but it is no means certain. Which is why I also believe that most speed camera's are located for maximum revenue generation. If they also reduce casualties then this is a by-product of that and not the other way round.

If a bus lane is not in effect 24 hours a day, it will have the hours of operation (often rush hour in or out of town etc). If there's no indication of time, it's 24h. If it's misleading and you get caught, make sure you take a photo of the sign to support your case. Round here, it's common to "tag" the signs over the hours of operation. Mad

People don't use them when the legally can due to the cars parked on them outside the operational hours (as they are allowed to do). It's easier just to stay out of them altogether. Evil or Very Mad

According the the Government blurb, which I happen to believe. If you hit a kid at 30MPH they stand a 80% chance of living Very Happy . If you hit a kid at 40MPH they stand a 80% chance of dying Sad . So unless you think that the whole thing is yet another Government lie, speed DOES kill. You would have a job to kill someone driving badly at 5MPH. It could be done I suppose, but not too likely. Its bad driving that is the contributory factor, the faster you are going, the more likely it is that you will kill yourself or someone else if you have an accident caused by the contributory addition of bad driving, either by yourself or someone else.
