Anyone used these for the quick creation of routes for SatMap?

Hi Dave,
I have used many of these, both UK and abroad. Just back from Tenerife where the routes were invaluable in the absence of good maps. I take the .plt file into 'GPS Utility', convert it to a route, and then save as a .gpx that can be imported to Active 10. You need to edit the .gpx file to include a sensible route name that then appears in Active 10, and I also delete the wpt rows, leaving only the rtept rows.
I don't use the pnf .wpt files, as I think they only give the way points rather than a route, although importing through SatSync to a .map file might create a route. I'm not sure.
Hope this helps.
Tony

Yes, I have used this disk that compliments the excellent Discovery Walking Guide books, you should use GPSU to convert the files to gpx format so SatSync can then accept the files, currently AFAIK GPSU cannot go straight from pnf to map format. There is a free trial version of GPSU included on the disk but you really need to purchase the full version to get this working correctly. The software developer for GPSU understands how the map file format works, but I guess until enough people request map file output for the active10 this won't be added to the application.

I wrote some code on the PC to batch convert the files from pnf to gpx last year, I will have another look at that when I get home - Mike

Can the data be imported directly in to Quo or MM so that we could play around with the route and then export it to GPX format?

I agree, these are excellent books and far more informative than others I have looked at.

Just trying to find a way of quickly getting the data into some digital mapping software and on to the SatMap!

I don't think Quo or MM can support the import of files straight from the disk, you need to use GPSU, although what I did was to strip out the waypoint, lat and long values to a text file, if this were saved as csv then it should import to MM or Quo - I will have a play with the files later.
I did convert dozens of files but I am not too sure if I did all of them or just the ones for the books I use - Mike

I have this disc too, but gave up with the GPSU as I recall I could not get it to work. in addition I suspect it loaded a lot of rubbish into my Satmap which I only got rid of with a total re-instalation from an SD card.

I have managed to convert the PLT files to GPX using GPS Babel.

If anyone has a better solution or a batcher it would be more than welcome.

If not, we will have to wait until Satmap becomes the industry standard.

I have tried to convert from GPSU .plt files to .gpx or .mmo without success using GPS Babel - no route or track data is produced.
What "input format" do you use.
TIA

I am a complete novice, but I just followed my intuition and got lucky. There may be better methods than this.

Using GPSBabel (GUI) I selected "OziExplorer" as the input format and pointed the browse option to a PLT file I wat to convert. Selected "GPX XML (.gpx)" as the output and then imported the new file into the Active 10.

Good Luck

I tried Oziexplorer to .gpx but get the error "OZI: Unsupported datum 'Ord Srvy Grt Britn'.".

Input format "Gpsutil" SEEMS to work but no track appears when I import the file to memory map or Topofusion. Question

It seems I got lucky in choosing the Ecton Mines file (Peak District), which worked as I described.

When I tried the same settings for the Helvellyn from Thirlmere (Lake District north) plt file I got an error message about osgb being an invalid datum.

Does anyone else have an solution or understand how these files might differ?

I also found that some can be converted by GPSBabel others can't.
I looked at the ones that can't be opened with Notepad. The problem is their header - it says "Ord Srvy Grt Britn" but should say "WGS 84".
However even if you replace "Ord Srvy Grt Britn" with "WGS 84" they still dont work.
I did eventuallly get them to work by relacing all of the track point data in a working file EXCEPT the very first point and the header - with the track point data from a none working one.
I then removed the first point in MM.
Hope this helps.

Have a look at GPSU there is a new download test version on This page.

Version 4.9r improvements include:

Support for Sector search and Creeping Line search patterns
Import of NMEA files containing $GPGLL sentences
Implemented user option to allow shorter suffixes for automatic Waypoint ID generation
Improvement to Nobeltec ONF file export
Export of SatMap *.map files
... plus a number of bug fixes

This might be the easiest way to convert the files in a single hit - Mike

Unfortunately the new version of GPSU (free version) restricts you to 500 track points and you cant add more points by pasting them in.
