I have a Tomtom 1 version 3 with internal memory of 1GB. I have the maps of W.Europe installed as standard and these take up 876.2mb. I see the new maps of W.Europe at £59.95 for v 8.25 are "modified to fit devices with 1gb memory" as tomtom say. Does this mean I get a watered down version of the real product? Also, with a new map maybe next year, will tomtom still have to remove some of the product to fit my device as I would think new roads and a few more P.O.I's could well take it above 1gb? Sad

Hi Royston. It has been a subject of mystery with which details Tomtom 'remove' for the devices that have a very small amount of memory. I don't think anyone knows for definite, one can only speculate it may be straighter roads, and less rivers, built up estate markings, trees etc.

Tomtom do reduce details in the smaller maps, both in level of non road features and in removing smaller roads. An example is between the 740 and 940 devices, the 740 has a smaller Europe map than the 940. Tomtom have confirmed to me that much of the mapping of Russia is removed in the 740 maps when compared to the 940

An interesting question that has also been up for discussion is whether the regional maps have the same level of details as the WE/WCE maps or possibly a higher level.

Don't forget the map you have already is also the smaller version for 1GB models, so if you are happy with that, you'll probably be happy with the new one.

I would be a little cautious of tkerby's answer as I have always believed the level of detail on the regional maps is exactly the same as on the wider area maps, FOR THE COUNTRIES TT CLAIM TO FULLY COVER, and I find it hard to believe that any small roads would be removed from the smaller versions as a general policy - especially in the UK.

The situation for countries like Russia WILL be different, as TomTom don't claim to provide full (~99.9%) road coverage for those.

Try going to the TT mapshop and selecting a few different maps for different models and you will see where the coverage is full and where it isn't.

Normally, the only details reduced are off-road features like some lakes and rivers, and TT have had a policy of reducing the smoothness of curves on toads for several years now.

So that's why they haven't got time to put things right. Maybe they should keep their minds on the job Shocked

Hi Andy_P
Just make one tiny cock-up in your spelling and the vultures circle overhead.

Au contraire mon ami.

We all make mistakes, I personally always verge on gold medal status. I always use the preview button and still the bu**ers get through.
I just thought that slip up was particularly funny ............. Sorry Andy_P, you can't even edit it out now Wink

I'm typing on my knees and my wireless keyboard starts playing up when it is more than about 3 inches away from the receiver. I NEVER make typos myself... Wink

Reminds me of that wonderful "Rindercella and her sugly isters" by the legendry Ronnie Barker, Here One of the greatest miss spelt words collections ever written - how the heck he could recite that in front of a camera though without stopping....

There is location where you can drive on toads at certain times of the year, but as I cannot remember where it is I will get my coat..... Mike

Back to the OP!!!

Could the smaller mapping be due to the fact that the TT1 does not have lane guidance and IQ routing so the roads could be the same, but no pretty pictures of motorway junctions or multipe journey times will reduce the map size?
