I have spotted a Tom Tom One XL with European maps for sale in my local Sainsburys brand new for £99. I get a 15% staff discount with my Dad's staff card.
However, I am worried that it might be a really old model with a slow chipset or something. So what should I be checking on it to make sure it is a bargain?
Which series and model numbers are good and which aren't?
Also can I buy the traffic receiver seperately and make it work with the unit?

For £85 it sounds very good, the original One XL is now some 18 months old, but it still is a very capable performer - have a read of This Thread for our thoughts on the device as it launched (based on a few months of driving around using the unit).
The newer XL is slimmer, but in use you won't notice too much difference, the older device offers the SD card slot and Bluetooth for a mobile phone (data only via GPRS no hands free) neither of which are available for the newer XL - Mike |

Yoooooooo,
I would check out all the details on the box you have, like is it a One XL, or the new XL 22 version (these are 170 quid according to TomTom).
Check out a similar model in Halfords or Comet etc.
The early model was able to take the traffic thing I believe, not sure about bluetooth though.
If you do a search of the Forums here, there was a post yesterday I think by someone asking to compare the old XL and the new XL. Didn't pay a lot of attention sorry because I don't have one.

You can read that by clicking Here although it doesn't cover too much.
Both the XL devices (new and old) can use the RDS-TMC accessory, the older device has the dedicated connector for this purpose, the newer XL has to use the newer Mini USB style RDS-TMC receiver.
Either device (new or old) work very well, the newer device will probably come with much more up to date maps though, and I am not too sure the original XL came with the LMG (Latest Map Guarantee) scheme - Mike |

It's definitely the old model then as it has bluetooth. I know that much.
Assuming then it doesn't have the latest maps can I upgrade it, and if so how much does it cost to do so?

reading around other threads people say you can get the 720 cheap. If so where from, and somone also said you can update it to 730 functionality? How can you do this?
If I do get the XL can i put extra voices on it?

you can download the latest maps for free once after you have bought a tomtom, (the latest map gaurantee).
I wouldnt have thought you could get the 720 for much less than £140.
The x20 series is updated via your PC with the TomTom Home software. |

I bought my 720 about 2 weeks ago now, and did the updates to the 730 spec. Now has the latest version 8 maps and software.
You will be aware that there are a few 'glitches' with this at the moment, but appears that other users including those who bought the new x40 units have issues as well. Seems to be random across the board, certainly with me and TomTom HOME.
Anyway, I bought from Amazon fr £170 including p&p.
Handtec did have it for £150.
Postings on here where Halfords and even PC World had it for just under £150, but were hard to find in the stores. The 720 is getting harder to find.
A couple os posts on here as well showing the 920 at under £200, but that has USA maps as well, and maybe to much.
Can't help with the XL, as Mike said in one of his posts, not sure if the older XL has the free map upgrade offer. The 720/920 certainly does - I used it

Thanks for the update on LMG as I coudn't remember whether you got it with that device!
As for other voices, the One XL can only use the recorded voices, it cannot use the Text To Speech voices that read out street names etc. this functionality is reserved for the x20, x30 and x40 unless you have a US spec XL-S - Mike |

Cheers for all your help.
Got it today for £84.99 brand new and it is absolutely brilliant for the price - a billy bargain.
Just setting it up now.
So what is the best traffic option for the unit?
The RDS TMC or the GPRS mobile based solution (I get unlimited data with my iphone).
