Is it possible to buy maps from anyone else apart from Tom Tom direct?

You can only buy TomTom maps (ie you can only use maps produced by TomTom), if that's what you mean.

But you can sometimes buy genuine maps on SD card from places like Amazon.
Often these are quite old though, and it's usually quite hard to find what version number they actually are.
