I'm in the market for a 256MB SD card to replace a 128MB Sandisk card that isn't doing TT3 any favours.

Valueflash have a Kingston card listed for the bargain price of £34 inc. vat. I phoned and apparently it's a Toshiba. Clove have a 'high-speed' Simpletech card for £45 inc. vat.

Does anybody have any experience of either of these cards? Am I likely to see any real benefits in going for the high-speed card in my 3970 (with v2.00 ROM)?

Thanks

Hi Scott,

I don’t have any experience of either of the two SD cards, as long as they’re not Scandisk then you should be OK.

However I strongly recommend that you upgrade to 2.10 ROM and the additional SD fix. I’m running both on my 3970 with no ill effects.

Regards,

The SimpleTech card is probably Panasonic, which tends to be the fastest and most reliable type. I don't know whether the ProX stuff is simply a marketing designation, whether it guarantees that the card is Panasonic, or whether it's genuinely faster than standard SimpleTech, which are usually Panasonic anyway.

Toshiba cards are nearly as good - they're about a third the write speed of Panasonic, but read speeds are very near to Panasonic cards in most machines. It's read speed that matters most. I believe Toshiba cards are slightly slower than Panasonic in other ways, too, but that doesn't make that much difference.

As Robert says, the most important thing is to avoid Sandisk and rebadges thereof. Either of these cards should work fine - I used a Lexar 256MB SD card that I'm pretty sure was Toshiba up until a week ago, when I bought a 512MB SD card that was made by Panasonic. The SimpleTech probably has a small performance edge, though it's not much.

I would also join Robert in recommending the 2.10 ROM and SD driver fix (you need to install both, first the ROM then the fix). This will require a hard reset on the Pocket PC, which wipes it clean, but I think it's worth it.

Thanks for the replies.

(I did look at the ROM upgrade when it was released. IIRC, the main benefit was SDIO which I have no use for. The other stuff was pretty minor. It didn't seem worth upgrading to then have to immediately install a workaround to get the SD memory card speed back to where it was in the first place!)

I have a SimpleTech 256 mb ProX card, purchased about 2 weeks ago. When inserted into the card reader it's labelled "Toshiba256". I would therefore conclude that it's made by Toshiba.
