Hi

Just brought a new RDS-TMC to use in the USA (florida) only to find that "it is not compatable in this area" This is the message i get when connecting to my 720.

I've checked the box and the instructions and there is nothing about not working in the states!!

Or is it something to do with my unit. !

Thanks

Yes the USA tmc cable does not work in europe and the europe tmc cable does not work in the USA. This is due to the differences in the systems used. The USA system uses an annual fee based system for the tmc service, the europeans have a fee based and a free system. Although in the UK currently only the free based system.

Well, I'm waiting for a RDS-TMC module to arrive on my doorstep to test all that. So...this is not a bookmark ;)

Well i see you are in the US, so when your new one arrives, it will work for 12 months but then require a subscription of about $60 a year for the traffic service in the USA.

Well, according to this coverage map, $60 would be quite overpriced:

Yes the coverage is poor in certain areas. I would be careful of getting the system if i was not near a transmitter listed on that pic.

Well, traffic around here is pretty predictable, as in, never a problem. But I'm sure as hell not going to pay $60/yr for the few times a year that I'm actually going near one of the red dots ;)

I thought the transmitter was a one-time fee for the cable and you did not have to pay again. I mean how can they know you are using it, it only receives signals from FM.

This is true for the UK, but the US unit does require a 12 month subscription, they can quite simply alter the code being transmitted to the device, or simply disable the RDS once 12 months is up in software - Mike

It's probably done a bit like subscription TV, i.e. the data stream is encrypted and gets decrypted by a key in your receiver. The keys probably change once a month or so and if you don't get sent the new key it stops working.

yes, the TomTom software will alert you that your "ClearChannel subscription" will be about to expire in x days, and after that the receiver won't get any more messages. I have no idea how they re-enable it though if you decide to cough up.
